Pre-requisites:

1. Theory to Private Pilot Licence (AERO2469) and Flying to Private Pilot Licence (AERO2470)
and/or
2. Theory to Commercial Pilot Licence (AERO2473) and Flying to Commercial Pilot Licence (AERO2474) 
or
3. A holder of CASA Private Pilot Licence
and/or
4. A holder of CASA Commercial Pilot Licence

Course Description

This course will complement the underpinning skills and knowledge required for the flying course AERO 2478 Flying to Instrument Rating.

This course provides the basis of the knowledge required to undertake the CASA Instrument Rating Theory Exam (IREX).


Objectives/Learning Outcomes/Capability Development

This course contributes to the following Program Learning Outcomes for AD023 Associate Degree in Aviation (Professional Pilots). 

  • Demonstrate knowledge of underpinning theoretical Instrument Flight Rules (IFR) principles and analyse information to complete a range of activities
  •  Demonstrate the cognitive, technical and creative thinking skills to a broad understanding of the theoretical Instrument Flight Rules
  • Ability to apply a depth of knowledge in a range of industry practise fundamentals in contexts that are subject to change, and adapt knowledge and skills in a range of contexts.
  • Demonstrate the application of skills and knowledge to adapt fundamental principles, concepts and techniques to known and unknown situations
  • Plan and execute activities to an appropriate professional standard.
  • Understanding of and commitment to professional and ethical responsibilities


Course Learning Outcomes (CLOs)

On completion of this course you should be able to:

  1. Apply technical knowledge in problem solving, and practical engineering examples and be able to analyse the physical world in a systematic manner.
  2. Perform critical analysis and apply problem solving skills and obtain opportunities to formulate and solve problems.
  3. Relate to professional practice in understanding of the Instrument Flight Rules.
  4. Obtain the skills and knowledge to sit CASA IREX exam.


Overview of Learning Activities

The learning activities included in this course are:

  • Attendance at lectures where syllabus material will be presented and explained.
  • Completion of tutorial questions and possibly workshop projects designed to give further practice in the application of flying theory to given situations, and to give feedback on student progress and understanding;
  • Completion of class exercises consisting of numerical calculations and other factors requiring an integrated understanding of the subject matter; and
  • Private study, working through the course as presented in classes, information gathered from practical demonstrations and learning materials, and gaining practice at solving flight related calculations.
  • Test and Exams

You will be required to use CASA and other texts and as well as receiving classroom handouts. Videos, practical demonstrations and discussions in the classroom will enhance your learning.


Overview of Assessment

This course has no hurdle requirements.

Assessment Task 1: Tutorial end of class topics 

Weighting towards final grade (%):5% (total 25%)
This task assesses all the learning outcomes: CLOs 1- 4

Assessment Task 2: Individual Online Tests (3 in total)
Weighting towards final grade (%): 30%
This task assesses the following learning outcomes: CLO 3 and 4

Assessment Task 3: Final Exam: Covering all topics covered during the semester
Weighting towards final grade (%): 45%
This task assesses all the learning outcomes: CLOs 1 - 4 

Note: You will be required to pass the external CASA IREX Theory examination in order to attempt the CASA Command Instrument Rating flight test.
