Course Description

In this course you will address digital production for both 2D and 3D outcomes. You will develop skills and knowledge to design for and prepare files for packaging including FMCG (fast moving consumer goods). You will consider and apply legal and standards requirements to packaging labelling. The course will allow you to conduct research (including sustainability implications), create mood-boards, develop rationales, and create mock-ups as part of the packaging design process. This course is designed to further develop your technical understanding of image capture, image manipulation and editing requirements for various design outcomes that may include preparation of files for more complex and multi purpose surface graphics.


Objectives/Learning Outcomes/Capability Development

In this course you will develop the following program outcomes:

  • Identify and employ a range of graphic and communication techniques in order to design, refine and produce artwork using well developed digital production skills for multiple contexts.
  • Interpret and respond to a brief considering the needs and expectations of relevant stakeholders, industry conventions, legal requirements, and ethical and sustainable practice implications for the Graphic Design industry and broader global community.


Upon successful completion of this course, you will be able to:

  • Prepare complex text and graphics files for pre-press processing.
  • Evaluate the role and implications of packaging in the design industry.
  • Apply industry-standard image editing and colour adjustment techniques to achieve digital images which meet production specifications and quality requirements.
  • Interpret and respond to industry style briefs applying appropriate and creative 3-dimensional-based outcomes.


Overview of Learning Activities

Your learning activities will take place in a computer laboratory using industry software. You will complete exercises, industry style briefs and activities. You will also be required to undertake independent study.

You will be assessed on how well you meet the course’s learning outcomes and on your development against the program capabilities.

Assessment is as follows:

4 x projects - 25% each
