Course Description
This is the prerequisite course to Manufacturing Capstone Project.
This course will initially cover some of the fundamental issues dealing with the management and delivery of engineering research projects. The students will then select a research topic and carry out a detailed literature search which will form the basis for an in-depth experimental program of work as part of Manufacturing Capstone Project.
Objectives/Learning Outcomes/Capability Development
The course is designed to introduce you to all aspects of conducting a major research project in manufacturing from problem development, background research, project planning and reporting. This course will contribute to your development of the following capabilities:
- Problem solving and decision-making
- Advanced technical competence
- Working in teams and professional networks
- Research
After successfully completing this course, you should be able to demonstrate:
- an appropriate level of competency in initiating and conducting research in manufacturing technologies and their application in modern manufacturing
- detailed understanding of principles involved in research project design and planning, and ability to apply them appropriately
- an appropriate level of competency in presenting the results orally and in a written form.
Overview of Learning Activities
Course material will be presented using conventional lectures, on issues relevant to conducting a research project.
The course will provide you with knowledge and understanding of the principles of conducting a major research project and presenting its findings orally and in a written format.
Overview of Learning Resources
The primary learning resources available for this course include:
Course materials provided online through “myRMIT”
Resources as advised by course coordinator
You will also find invaluable information in and through the RMIT Library.
Overview of Assessment
Assessment in this course will consist of:
- A detailed literature report on the research topic and recommendation for further work which will be carried out as part of the follow-on course “Manufacturing Capstone Project”
- An oral presentation on the research topic
