Course Description

This course will provide you with knowledge and skills to identify fibres, yarns and fabrics commonly used in fashion garments and accessories.

With consideration of current environmental and sustainability issues, you will be able to make informed decisions regarding the development of textile products in relation to properties and performance characteristics.


Objectives/Learning Outcomes/Capability Development

In this course you will develop the following program learning outcomes:

a) Lead and manage own work and other team members or individuals within a fashion and textiles enterprise.

b) Problem solve effectively in a fashion and textiles enterprise.

c) Apply sustainable practices related to fashion and textiles issues.
 


Upon successful completion of this course, you will be able to:

a) Identify, compare and evaluate fibres (natural and man-made) and fabrics (woven, knitted and non-woven).

b) Describe and analyse a variety of fabric construction processes, finishes and colouring applied to fabrics.

c) Assess suitability of fabrics for end use and communicate the analyses to industry standards.

d) Compare and contrast sustainability ideas, issues and opportunities in the development and processing of fashion materials.
 


Overview of Learning Activities

The main learning activities in this course include: lectures, workshops, tutorials, case studies, and oral presentations.

You will collect fibre and fabric samples. You will also observe and analyse fabric qualities and performance. Working in groups you will brainstorm and provide feedback on fabric findings.

RMIT will provide you with resources and tools for learning in this course through our online systems.

Resources that will assist you with your learning will include notes, reference lists, library resources, computer laboratory and relevant software.
 


Overview of Assessment

You will be assessed on how well you meet the course’s learning outcomes and on your development against the program capabilities.

Assessment may include tests, case studies and assignments. Feedback will be given on all assessment tasks.
