Course Description
Technologies are increasingly moving towards the creation of smaller size engineered components in micro and nano dimensions. In such dimensions, the engineering knowledge which is required to design and implement ideas is fundamentally different. The course focuses on establishing the foundations for understanding the behaviour of systems in micro and nano realm. The course will provide a basic overview of all fundamental physical and mathematical principles required for micro/nanoscale processes. This would include electronic band structures, quantum electronic and mechanical phenomena, and scaling effects.
Objectives/Learning Outcomes/Capability Development
This course and its assessment develop the following Program Learning Outcomes:
1. High levels of technical competence in the field
2. Be able to apply a systematic design approach to engineering projects and have strong design skills in the chosen discipline specialisation.
3. Communicate effectively across all modes: listen, speak, write and draw.
On completion of this course you would be able to:
1. Define the forces that govern systems in micro and nano domains
2. Identify and apply selected physical and chemical properties of low scale materials and their interactions with each other.
3. Design engineering systems in micro and nano scales.
