There are no prerequisites for this course, however, it is recommended you enrol in MANU2226 Textile Fibre Structures and Surface Treatments at the same time as this course because it contains areas of knowledge and skills which are implemented together in practice.
Course Description
This course is an overview and introduction to the fashion system, material culture and fashion product analysis. You will investigate the methods adopted across the supply chain for fabric selection, sourcing, production and manufacturing options. You will critically review garment construction and specification formats and how consumer choice impacts on product performance and costs.
Through a case study analysis of key fashion products, you will explore garment cut make and trim in conjunction with textile finishes, dyeing, printing and in relationship to professional testing and labelling methods. Fashion culture and language is investigated via reading contemporary fashion literature.
Objectives/Learning Outcomes/Capability Development
Upon successful completion of the course you will be able to:
- Research issues related to garment construction, style and quality systems to identify the relationship between fabric selection, design and the manufacturing process.
- Critically analyse production processes and manufacturing methods aligned to appropriate target market sectors and the relationship to the end consumer.
- Conduct background research and analysis on the contemporary global fashion system and identify the elements and opportunities for future entrepreneurial thinking.
In this course you will develop the following program learning outcomes:
- Research and creatively solve problems, demonstrating expert judgment and ethical responsibility relating to your professional practice in fashion entrepreneurship.
- Professionally communicate propositions, processes and outcomes to address specialist and non- specialist audiences while working with cultural differences in an appropriate manner.
- Master a body of knowledge and specific technical and research skills to recognize and apply relevant advanced technologies within fashion organizations/your professional field.
- Investigate emergent global entrepreneurial issues and strategically respond to their impact in the fashion and textiles industry.
Overview of Learning Activities
This course consists of lectures and tutorials that will operate in lecture, tutorial and workshop formats.
Lectures will introduce key concepts and theories.
Tutorials are used to gain practical experience applying the key principles.
As part of the course program you will be engaged in workshops, interactive class activities, group discussions and class presentations. Industry speakers, field trips and DVDs will be included to facilitate learning.
You will have the opportunity for ‘hands on’ engagement with the fashion and textiles industry to apply your knowledge of production techniques
Your learning will also be derived from your own industry research which will include contact with external organizations. Current reading and research will enable completion of set tasks.

Overview of Assessment
You will be assessed on how well you meet the course’s learning outcomes and on your development against the program learning outcomes as demonstrated in a range of assessment tasks.
Assessment will cover both theoretical and practical aspects of your learning. Tasks may include: projects, journals, reports and presentations, individually and/or in groups.
Formative and summative feedback will be given on all assessment tasks progressively throughout the semester.
