Course Description

This course explores the ways in which global governance impacts upon policy and practice at the national and subnational level. You will examine key contemporary global political structures, institutions, actors and processes with regard to both theory and practice. This will include an examination of the role of governments, international organisations and non-state actors, focusing on the ways in which interested actors interact with each other and shape responses to governance challenges across a vast range of global concerns.

You will explore questions of international and global order, in particular the extent to which global society can be said to be "self-organizing" to accommodate new forms of governance through evolving transnational networks. The course equips you with the analytical and interpretive thinking skills necessary to become conversant with the formation, distribution and enforcement of ideas and norms in a rapidly changing world. The course employs the a range of conceptual approaches to the study of globalisation and global governance to enable you to conceive responses to practical governance challenges in your area of professional interest.


Objectives/Learning Outcomes/Capability Development

This course contributes to the development of the following program learning outcomes:

  • Critically reflect on socio-cultural diversity and values, world systems and the benefits of local and global development practices for communities engaged in development processes.
  • Determine and apply the specialist knowledge and technical skills required to creatively solve problems, demonstrating expert judgment and ethical responsibility in your professional practice in international development and humanitarian work.
  • Critically analyse, synthesize and reflect on personal awareness and lived experience, theories and practices of development, both local and international, to extend and challenge knowledge and practice in the discipline.
  • Professionally communicate propositions, processes and outcomes relating to international development and humanitarian responses to address specialist and non-specialist audiences.
  • Critically reflect on the causes and impacts of poverty in global contexts and evaluate the theories and practice of development institutions.

 


Upon successful completion of this course, you will be able to:

  1. Demonstrate a detailed knowledge of key global structures, institutions and processes that shape contemporary global policy and practice
  2. Analyse and interpret the power structures and interaction dynamics of global regimes as these relate to the governance of development, security, crime, human rights, refugees and the environment at the global, national and sub-national levels
  3. Recognise the actual and potential impacts of dominant political discourses on governance policies and practices
  4. Interpret critical issues at the intersections between politics, international and national law, and governance practices
  5. Experiment with the formulation of practical and systematic governance frameworks to mitigate diverse forms of risk


Overview of Learning Activities

Learning activities will include interactive activities (either in workshops or online) focusing on group-based discussion, analytical and problem solving tasks. Course learning materials will be made available in a range of formats, which may include published texts, lectures, guest speakers and online media. In order to develop your knowledge and skills, you will be expected to participate in interactive discussions and activities and to critically engage with set reading materials. The course provides a supportive learning environment where you will have the opportunity to share your knowledge and experiences, and to learn from the knowledge and experience your peers.


Overview of Learning Resources

You will be given access to a wide range of resources through a Course Reader or core textbook and also will be able to access to a wide range of online learning tools and content for your course from the student portal, myRMIT, and RMIT Library resources. These resources may include book chapters, journal articles, media articles, lecture notes, bibliographies for supplementary reading, video, and links to external websites. You will have the opportunity to contribute collectively to class resources by sharing your own research findings and sources with your peers.


Overview of Assessment

You will be given opportunities to demonstrate and reflect upon your conversance with key course concepts and core content. Assessment tasks may include research and analysis of specific policy issues, case studies, group presentations and written assignments. Assessment will be guided by how well you meet the course’s learning outcomes and on your development against the graduate capabilities. Feedback will be provided throughout the semester by your teachers and peers in class and/or online discussions, and through individual and/or group feedback on practical exercises.
