Course Description

This course extends knowledge and skills in management for planning, organising and coordinating early childhood education services. As leadership and management are often inherently linked, this course articulates the different dimensions of management concepts in early childhood similar to the management found in small-business enterprises. It critically synthesises the essentials of management and brings together a wealth of literature on management in early childhood to reconceptualise understanding of management theory and practice for continuity and stability in early childhood settings. You will examine strategies and models of management and develop capabilities necessary for active engagement with short and long term issues faced in the management of early childhood centres. A range of responsibilities in early childhood settings will be explored such as systems, records and files, human and financial resources management, organisational skills and understanding the policy and legislative regulations for early childhood services. The roles of management organisations like Early Childhood Management Services (ECMS) and local councils will be examined.


Objectives/Learning Outcomes/Capability Development

Upon successful completion of this course, you will be able to:

  • Identify and apply concepts of management in the practice of managing early childhood settings 
  • Reflect on differences between leadership and management
  • Critically analyse and synthesise management theories and recent early childhood developments in theory and practice both local and international contexts
  • Identify, evaluate and utilise a range of strategies for management that promote stability and smooth operations of early childhood centres
  • Discuss global and current requirements for professionalism in the management of early childhood settings 
  • Develop capability to work collaboratively with other stakeholders and liaison with relevant government authority.
