Course Description

In this course, you will explore how the self is represented in narrative. You will examine the roles that memory, sensation, dream-work and reverie play in the constitution (and de-constitution) of the narrated self in written forms such as memoir, biography and autobiography, philosophical and fictional works. You will explore how selfhood has been constructed historically, with a focus on how it has been reframed in contemporary life writings.

Objectives/Learning Outcomes/Capability Development

In this course you will develop the following program learning outcome:

  • Identify, evaluate and critically analyse cultural, historical and theoretical practices which contextualise your professional practice and further study.

Upon successful completion of this course you will be able to:

  • Describe and examine the narrative construction of the self in literary texts.
  • Evaluate the role of language in the self’s constitution and de-constitution.
  • Identify and analyse the complexity of selfhood and the limits of its narration in literary works.
  • Discuss and deploy contemporary criticisms of narrative selfhood in your analysis of texts.
