Course Description

This course will explore understandings about and expressions of the self through philosophical and literary works. You will have the opportunity to think, read, and discuss how others have sought to understand the self (in general) and themselves in particular. You will also have an opportunity to put their insights into practice with your own form of self-writing (scholarly-personal narrative). 


Objectives/Learning Outcomes/Capability Development

In this course you will develop the following program learning outcome:

  • Identify, evaluate and critically analyse cultural, historical and theoretical practices which contextualise your professional practice and further study.


Upon successful completion of this course you will be able to:

  1. Describe and examine the narrative construction of the self in literary and philosophical texts
  2. Evaluate the role of language and writing in the self’s constitution and de-constitution
  3. Identify and analyse the complexity of selfhood and the limits of its narration in literary works
  4. Discuss and deploy contemporary criticisms of narrative selfhood in your analysis of texts

Overview of Assessment

You will be assessed on how well you meet the course’s learning outcomes and on your development against the program learning outcomes. Assessment may include written and oral reports, reflective papers, creative projects and presentations, individually and in groups.

Assessment Tasks   Assessment Task 1: Scenario Response (30%), (Course Learning Outcomes: 1 and 4).   Assessment Task 2: The Workbook (30%), (Course Learning Outcomes: 1, 2 and 3).   Assessment Task 3: Self Writing: Scholarly-Personal Narrative (40%), (Course Learning Outcomes: 1,2, 3, and 4).

Feedback will be given on all assessment tasks.
