Course Description

In this course you will explore the theoretical, professional and practical knowledge required to extend your specialised property management skills, in particular the principles underpinning a strategic asset management approach. You will investigate issues that are relevant to a range of professionals working within the property sector including property developers, valuers and financial advisors.

You will also examine the objectives and requirements placed on real estate either owned or occupied by companies.  You will analyse diverse and complex performance metrics, real estate policy decision making and the investment criteria in order to critically evaluate the worth of real estate as a factor of economic production from a corporation’s point of view.

Program Learning Outcomes (PLOs)

As a Year One student  in this course,  you will develop the following program learning outcomes:

  • Determine and apply knowledge of complex property theory to inform decision making in local and global professional arena, demonstrating expert judgement and ethical decision making in your professional practice and discipline 
  • Critically analyse, integrate and apply the specialist knowledge and technical skills required to address industry problems and/or business opportunities in property
  • Professionally communicate property and/or valuation strategy, processes, propositions and/or decision making across the property and related sectors, negotiating with diverse stakeholders in an appropriate manner

As a Year Two student enrolled in this course you will develop the following program learning outcomes:

  • Determine and apply advanced knowledge of complex property theory to inform decision making in the local and global professional arena, demonstrating expert judgement and ethical decision making in your professional practice and discipline
  • Integrate and apply the specialist knowledge and technical skills required to address industry problems and or commercial opportunities in property
  • Professionally communicate property strategy, processes, propositions and/or decision making across the property and related sectors, leading and negotiating effectively with diverse stakeholders
  • Provide strategic advice to implement new directions within your professional field, responding to new and emerging industry trends and issues   


Course Learning Outcomes (CLOs)

Upon successful completion of this course you will able to:

  1. Identify, analyse and apply performance metrics to measure the contribution made by Real Estate to an organisation.
  2. Critically analyse and discuss the role and purpose that real estate plays within an organisation to determine the value it generates
  3. Determine and communicate effective Real Estate management advice to diverse property stakeholders
  4. Interpret and analyse the impact of “Own or Lease decisions” for corporate profitability
  5. Critically analyse and synthesise corporate property policies and asset management strategies to assess the value generated by a corporation


Overview of Learning Activities

This course will engage you in a range of learning activities including lectures, workshops, on line problem solving exercises and class discussions. These techniques will enhance your theoretical and practical understanding of corporate real estate. 


Overview of Learning Resources

You will be expected to utilise library and electronic resources (as well as other appropriate resources) to engage in professional reading of relevant literature in statistical methods. The learning resources used in this course include: lecture overheads, workshop activity sheets, and recommended texts.  RMIT will provide you with the resources and tools for learning in this course through our online systems.    


Overview of Assessment

You will be assessed on how well you meet the course’s learning outcomes and on your development against the program learning outcomes. 

Task 1: Test 1: Covers lecture material and tutorials from weeks 1-2. 10% weighting. CLO1, CLO3, CLO4. 

Task 2: Test 2: Covers lecture material and tutorials from weeks 3-6. 15% weighting. CLO2, CLO4.

Task 3: Individual assignment: Case study review of two contrasting organisations and their real estate needs/approach. 30% weighting. CLO1, CLO2, CLO3, CLO5.

Task 4: Test 3: Covers all lecture material and tutorials in course. 45% weighting. CLO1, CLO2, CLO3, CLO4.

Feedback will be given on all assessment tasks.
