Course Description

The application of modelling and computer simulation tools plays an integral role in the design and evaluation of energy efficient and sustainable buildings. Design, engineering and project management professionals use building simulation to understand and assess building performance. The results of modelling and simulation are required at multiple stages of the design process and need to be evaluated, critiqued and communicated to multiple stakeholders, including clients, architects, engineers and regulatory bodies.


In this course you will develop the specialised skills and knowledge required to carry out complex simulation and modelling tasks, developing professional capabilities in multiple modelling platforms including thermal, air flow and lighting simulation. You will gain expert knowledge in this emerging field, allowing you to understand the limitations and accuracy of building simulation. You will further develop skills for communicating the outcomes of building simulation to diverse stakeholders and to facilitate their use in the delivery of successful design strategies and implementations.

Program Learning Outcomes (PLOs)

In this course you will develop the following program learning outcomes:

  • Determine and apply knowledge of complex sustainable building theory, principles and practice, to contribute to the design and management of sustainable buildings
  • Critically analyse, synthesise and reflect on sustainable building theory and recent developments, both local and international, to extend and challenge knowledge and practice
  • Professionally communicate and justify sustainable building design principles, strategies, solutions and/or outcomes, engaging effectively with diverse stakeholders, including across the government and industry sectors
  • Adopt a building performance and systems approach, and apply specialist knowledge and technical skills to creatively address the diverse needs of sustainable building stakeholders


Course Learning Outcomes (CLOs)

Upon successful completion of this course, you will be able to:

  1. Critically analyse and apply the principles of building simulation to the design, operation, construction and assessment of energy efficient and sustainable buildings.
  2. Evaluate and communicate complex sustainability strategies utilising modelling and simulation methods to inform the sustainable building design process
  3. Apply specialised software technologies to undertake building performance evaluations for diverse local and global projects


Overview of Learning Activities

The course consists of on-line course materials, interactive workshops and seminars. You will be engaged in hands-on face to face and online interactive class activities, group discussions and computer based workshops.

Overview of Assessment

You will be assessed on how well you meet the course’s learning outcomes and on your development against the program learning outcomes. Assessment consists of: 

Task 1: Individual work: Report. Validating thermal envelope and fabric loads. 30% weighting. CLO1, CLO3.

Task 2: Individual work: Report. Building energy and environmental performance assessment – Case study. 40% weighting. CLO1, CLO2, CLO3.

Task 3: Individual work: Discussion paper. 30% weighting. CLO1, CLO2.

Feedback will be given on all assessment tasks.
