Course Description

In this course you will investigate storytelling and how leaders use it to communicate vision, inspire change within organisations and motivate for innovation.

You will examine leadership theory and practice from a range of perspectives. You will examine how words and images are used to persuade and how practice examples may be understood in light of theories of persuasion. You will also develop skills in the production of rhetoric to extend your communication repertoire, while gaining the knowledge to identify and ameliorate the rhetoric of others.
 


Objectives/Learning Outcomes/Capability Development

In this course you will develop the following program learning outcomes:

  • Critically apply strategic communication theories and principles to complex problem solving in your professional practice.
  • Provide leadership within your discipline as well as collaborate with others.


Upon successful completion of this course you will be able to:

  • Critically discuss the literature and major works related to leadership and the role of communication practices in leadership performance.
  • Identify and analyse the social and ethical responsibilities related to the production of rhetoric.
  • Design and create media products that use rhetorical techniques to communicate and persuade.
  • Critically reflect on your own and others’ practice, using your knowledge of rhetorical techniques in media and communication.
  • Propose new opportunities for organisational storytelling and interrogate the implications of emerging technologies for future practice.

You will be engaged in learning that involves a range of activities both face-to-face and online such as workshops, tutorials, group and class discussion, class activities and individual research.

Overview of Assessment

You will be assessed on how well you meet the course’s learning outcomes and on your development against the program learning outcomes. Assessment may include presentations, projects and may be done individually and in teams. 

 

Assessment Tasks 

Assessment Task 1: Workshop Participation, 20%, CLO2, CLO3 and CLO4 

Assessment Task 2: Case Study, 40% CLO1, CLO2 and CLO5  

Assessment Task 3: Reflection, 40% CLO1, CLO4 and CLO5
