Course Description

 In this capstone course you will consolidate and apply the knowledge and skills you have developed through the completion of your group or individual-based project commenced in Industry Project (Research). Feedback on your project will be provided by industry practitioners in leading disaster and international development agencies within the sector. Through the implementation of your research project you will determine, evaluate and present your findings. You will also review your contribution to knowledge and practice in the disaster and development field.

Upon successful completion of this course you will be able to:

  • Implement a substantial research project
  • Solve research problems and critically analyse findings in relation to your discipline and industry needs
  • Present findings to situate your work in the field to inform future professional practice and research
  • Critically reflect on your personal and professional learning and develop strategies to implement this learning in professional practice

 


 In this course you will develop the following program level learning outcomes:

  • Master a body of knowledge and specific technical skills to progress your professional career within the contemporary disaster management, design and development arena
  • Formulate and evaluate collaborative design informed strategies before and after disaster, while working within the constraints of industry needs in the post-disaster and development sectors
  • Determine and apply specialist knowledge and technical skills required to creatively solve problems, demonstrating expert judgment and ethical responsibility relating to your professional practice and disaster, design and development
  • Critically analyse, synthesize and reflect on complex theories and recent developments globally to extend and challenge knowledge and practice in design and development for disaster risk reduction and management
  • Professionally communicate propositions, processes and outcomes to address specialist and non-specialist audiences
  • Provide leadership within your discipline as well as collaborate with others in multi-disciplinary contexts across the disaster and development sector
  • Use appropriate research methods to develop and implement complex projects, evaluate theoutcomes and theorise about the contribution of your learning to the disaster management,design and development professions and knowledge areas    


Overview of Learning Activities

You will engage in learning that involves a range of activities, both face-to-face and online, such as discussions, group work and research and will be delivered in intensive mode. Learning how to analyse and comment on your own and others’ work will be achieved through presentations, reviews and discussions in groups.

 RMIT will provide you with resources and tools for learning in this course through our online systems including myRMIT. Field-based seminars and meetings with experts and organisations will comprise key learning activities and resources.

Additionally a list of recommended learning resources will be provided, including books, journal articles and web resources. You will also be expected to seek further resources relevant to the focus of your own learning.

Assessment Schedule

  1. Project Plan 10% (500 words)

Your first assessment task is to complete a project plan and timeline. Your project plan will identify key steps in the research project with key dates.

This task relates to the following learning outcomes:

  • Implement a substantial research project
  • Solve research problems and critically analyse findings in relation to your discipline and industry needs 
  1. Midway Progress Report 20% (1000 words)

This is an opportunity for you to gain feedback on your work to date. It is also an opportunity for you to identify gaps and revise your project timeline.  

This task relates to the following learning outcomes:

  • Implement a substantial research project
  • Solve research problems and critically analyse findings in relation to your discipline and industry needs
  • Present findings to situate your work in the field to inform future professional practice and research
  1. Reflective summary 20% (500 words)

Your reflective summary will provide an opportunity for you to reflect on your learning in this course and to identify key moments in the research process. You will consider not only what you have learnt but also how you have learnt and reflect on these learnings within the context of professional practice.

 Your reflective summary relates to the following course learning outcome:

  • Critically reflect on your personal and professional learning and develop strategies to implement this learning in professional practice
  1. Final report (individual) 50 % (3000 words PLUS revisions of Assignments 2 and 3)

Your final report is the culmination of your learning in MoDDD and in the industry project stream. The report will be completed in consultation with an industry partner and will address a real world need in the field of Disaster, Design and Development. This assessment task relates to the following course learning outcomes.

  • Present findings to situate your work in the field to inform future professional practice and research
