Course Description

This course adopts a very practical approach to the collection and subsequent analysis of quantitative data for research in business. It will focus on key approaches to the data collection process and how this relates to research objectives. A range of analysis techniques, including both approaches designed to understand inter-dependencies and dependencies in quantitative data will be covered. The course is concerned with both the issues involved in and the application of the techniques discussed in the thesis component of the degree. You will use appropriate software to implement the material covered in the course.

On the successful completion of this course you will be able to:

  1. Undertake empirical analysis using correct analytical techniques and appropriate software.
  2. Plan and design data collection methods and analysis.
  3. Discuss coherently, logically and in a scholarly manner the results of research activities.
  4. Reflect on chosen method, justifying judgments and decisions.
  5. Discuss and present findings of research activities from a broader perspective in a logical, coherent and succinct manner independently or collaboratively.
  6. Analyze data in an ethical manner, avoiding selective use of data, concealing of results and fabrication of outcomes.

Learning in this course will occur through a variety of experiences that may include lectures, problem solving exercises, tutorial activities and workshops. You are required to actively participate in these activities. You are expected to supplement class notes with your own, and also refer to textbooks, references provided in classes, and other relevant material.
