The course assumes that students have a basic understanding of working with, and providing services directly to, service users and their supporters.


Course Description

This course introduces students to key theories, practice skills and lived experience frameworks for responding to people who experience trauma, violence and abuse. Critical, trauma informed practice principles are the foundation of the course. Socio-political factors which intersect with the experience of trauma are considered critically. Lived experience is central, valued and a core element of the learning and teaching experience. 
 


Objectives/Learning Outcomes/Capability Development

This course is an option course at a postgraduate level and as such does not contribute to any program learning outcomes.


Course Learning Outcomes 

Upon successful completion of this course, you will be able to: 

  1. Analyse the impact of diverse political, social, cultural and psychological discourses on experiences of trauma. 
  2. Critically evaluate competing theories about trauma. 
  3. Appraise your values regarding experiences of trauma, violence and abuse. 
  4. Formulate trauma informed practice responses.  
  5. Engage in practice which acknowledges the multicultural nature of contemporary societies and acknowledges the unique position of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, seeking to promote the rights of these groups.


Overview of Learning Activities

You will be engaged in learning that involves a range of activities such as seminars, interactive workshops, class and small group discussions, individual activities and reflection, simulations and independent reading and research.  

The course is taught as an intensive and will involve learning and teaching activities before the commencement of the face to face teaching component. 

Exploring situations associated with the subject of loss, trauma and grief may at times be uncomfortable or challenging.  

Your attendance is necessary so that you can build knowledge and skills and assess your relationship to the topics.

A list of recommended learning resources will be available on Canvas including books, articles, videos and web resources. 

Prior to commencement of the intensive, a series of lectures, activities and resources will be posted in Canvas. Students must complete this part of the course before attending the intensive. 

You will also be supported to seek further resources relevant to the focus of your own learning.

Overview of Assessment

You will be assessed on how well you meet the course’s learning outcomes and on your development against the program learning outcomes. 

Assessment Tasks 

Assessment Task 1: Essay, 50% CLO1, CLO2 and CLO4 

Assessment Task 2: Simulated recording and reflection, 50%, CLO3 and CLO4
