Course Description

Infrastructure asset management is an integrated and multidisciplinary course that covers different strategies in supporting and sustaining public infrastructure assets. Such assets include water treatment facilities, bridges, transport infrastructure and sewer lines. This course focuses on the later stages of the life cycle of an infrastructure  (particularly  maintenancerehabilitation, and replacement). It is suitable for professional engineers employed in the infrastructure asset management sector (including  local and state government and engineering consultancies).


Objectives/Learning Outcomes/Capability Development

This course contributes to development of the following program learning outcomes for MC257 Master of Engineering (Civil Engineering):

1. Needs, Context and Systems

  • Describe, investigate and analyse complex engineering systems and associated issues (using systems thinking and modelling techniques).

2. Problem Solving and Design

  • Develop creative and innovative solutions to engineering problems.
  • Anticipate the consequences of intended action or inaction and understand how the consequences are managed collectively by your organisation, project or team.

3. Analysis

  • Comprehend and apply advanced theory-based understanding of engineering fundamentals and specialist bodies of knowledge in the selected discipline area to predict the effect of engineering activities.

4. Professional Practice

  • Initiate, plan, lead or manage engineering activities.
  • Apply systematic approaches to the conduct and management of engineering projects.


On completion of this course you should be able to:

  1. Critically review contemporary and emerging theories in the area of infrastructure asset management.
  2. Apply appropriate theories to problems of infrastructure asset management.
  3. Evaluate the benefits and limitations of different infrastructure asset management techniques when decision making in regard to maintenance intervals.
  4. Conduct a life cycle cost analysis.
  5. Design appropriate methods for performing maintenance requirements analysis on specific equipment given a specific situation.
  6. Identify and argue significant design concepts affecting operational feasibility and relate these concepts to a variety of asset management situations and contexts.

The course activities are structured around lectures and tutorials to develop and consolidate your knowledge. Through assignments, presentations and online case studies, you will apply and enhance both your theoretical and practical skills.

In this course you will interrogate contemporary and emerging literature with local, national and global relevance in order to inform your specialist knowledge and skills in the area of infrastructure asset management. This assessment task addresses lifecycle assessment and strategy identification (CLOs 4, 5 and 6)

Assessment Task 4 End of Semester Exam [50%] (CLOs 1-6)
