In this course, you will be introduced to a range of research resources and methods to support the deepening of your art practice. The principles and tools you will use are based upon the critical interplay between making and reflecting. These include online and printed resources; library and visual research methods; how to make effective use of individual and group critiques; and how to make critical use of gallery and other cultural contexts for your own practice. You will be required to utilise these research resources and methods and demonstrate how they inform aspects of your Masters research.

Program Learning Outcomes
In this course you will develop the following program learning outcomes:
- Carry out self directed studio based learning and independent research to develop your individual art practice and locate your artwork within appropriate contemporary, conceptual and theoretical contexts.
- Test, experiment and explore formal and conceptual issues through individual studio practice.
- Research, analyse and synthesise information and select appropriate methods and resources within your art practice.
- Present a body of artwork that demonstrates a level of technical and conceptual excellence in contemporary art practice.
Upon successful completion of this course, you will be able to:
- Make effective use of a range of creative research resources.
- Make critical use of gallery visits and other art events.
- Productively apply the feedback provided on your work in solo and group critique sessions.
- Describe and critically analyse your own work and the work of other artists.
Overview of Learning Activities
This course involves a variety of learning experiences designed to develop your awareness of the range of resources, strategies and methods which can be harnessed to further your critical studio practice. Across the six sessions students engage in lectorial sessions, a gallery visit, reflective writing practice and bibliographic research to become conversant in methodology of creative research.

Students are able to make use of the online and hardcopy ADRs that are archived from previous MFA graduates.
RMIT will provide you with resources and tools for learning in this course through our online systems.

The MFA has a very extensive searchable reading list, which is made available to all enrolled students.

Overview of Assessment
You will be assessed on how well you meet the course’s learning outcomes and on your development against the program capabilities.
Assessment may include:
- Library search & annotated bibliography 20%
- Gallery/art event visit critique/report 30%
- Two Critical feedback Reports (1 addressing solo critique with supervisor & 1 addressing a group critique session) 30%
- Engagement with oral critical discourse 20% (engaging with ideas, constructive feedback)
Feedback will be given on all assessment tasks.
