None.

Course Description

In this course you will be introduced to the mathematical skills required for further study leading to the tertiary fields of engineering, applied science and computing. In this skill-based course you will develop your understanding of algebra, basic curve sketching, linear programming, matrices and trigonometry. You will gain a firm foundation in analysis, problem solving and the use of technology.

Objectives/Learning Outcomes/Capability Development

See Learning Outcomes.

Course Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this course, you will be able to:

  1. Simplify, factorize and manipulate linear and quadratic algebraic expressions to aid in solving a range of algebraic problems.
  2. Sketch straight line graphs, linear inequalities, and quadratics showing all key features.
  3. Manipulate matrix equations and use them to simultaneous equations.
  4. Apply appropriate laws to simplify and solve equations and transpositions involving indices and logarithms.
  5. Apply trigonometric formulae for right angled and non-right angled triangles to solve practical problems.
  6. Apply mathematical techniques to solve application-style problems.

Program Learning Outcomes

In this course you will develop the following program learning outcomes:

  1. Explain and apply foundational knowledge in one or more academic disciplines.
  2. Employ academic English and communication skills appropriately in a range of academic contexts.
  3. Demonstrate familiarity and capability in study skills for an Australian university environment.
  4. Work independently and in groups to meet learning outcomes.
  5. Apply approaches to critical and analytical thinking and problem solving.
  6. Use a range of current learning technologies to enhance academic outcomes.

Overview of Learning Activities

This course includes a combination of lectures and tutorials as well as an equivalent amount of time spent in self-study completing exercises and additional tasks outside of scheduled classes.

You are expected to actively participate in all learning activities including note taking during scheduled classes, discussion, answering questions both verbally and in writing, solving both class exercises and revision tasks.

Overview of Learning Resources

RMIT will provide you with resources and tools for learning in this course through our online systems. You will have access to important announcements, staff contact details, teaching schedules, assessment timelines and a variety of important learning materials.

Overview of Assessment

You will be assessed on how well you meet the course’s learning outcomes and on your development against the program learning outcomes.

Assessment will include:

Task 1: Quizzes, 30%, CLO 1, CLO 2, CLO 3, CLO 4, CLO 5

Task 2: Application Task, 35%, CLO 6

Task 3: Examination, 35%, CLO 1, CLO 2, CLO 3, CLO 4, CLO 5

Feedback will be given on all assessment tasks.

If you have a long term medical condition and/or disability it may be possible to negotiate to vary aspects of the learning or assessment methods. You can contact the program coordinator of the Disability Liaison Unit if you would like to find out more.

Your course assessment conforms to RMIT assessment principles, regulations, policies, procedures and instructions which are available for review online: http://www.rmit.edu.au/policies/academic#assessment
