Course Description

This course offers students who have successfully completed pre-requisite coursework an opportunity to undertake an applied, supervised research project. In consultation with the course coordinator, you will choose a project topic and mode of study which will enhance your knowledge of an area relevant to nursing and/or health care.

The research capabilities you will develop are congruent with those demonstrated by nurses working either as advanced clinicians, managers, or educators in the health care sector. You will refine reflective practice and writing skills, adhere to agreed standards of research ethics in nursing and midwifery domains and contribute to the development of research/evidence-based policy and practice in nursing and midwifery. You will also consolidate your capacity to develop and transform professional practice through the process of critical evaluation and reflection.

In undertaking this project work you will be expected to demonstrate an understanding of the research process including the identification of a significant research problem or issue, the development of appropriate research questions, the selection and implementation of an appropriate research method, a critical review of the relevant literature, writing up the results, and dissemination of findings.

You can select any individual or combination of the following courses to pursue your research interests and/or prepare for future higher degree research studies:

Objectives/Learning Outcomes/Capability Development

This course contributes to the development of the Program Learning Outcomes for MC268 Master of Mental Health Nursing in the following ways. The Mental Health Nurse:

  • PLO 4: Collaboratively plans and provides ethically based care consistent with the mental, physical, spiritual, emotional, social and cultural needs of the individual.
  • PLO 7: Demonstrates evidence based practice and actively promotes practice innovation through lifelong education, research, professional development, clinical supervision and reflective practice.
  • PLO 8: Practices by incorporating and reflecting common law requirements, relevant statutes and the nursing profession’s code of conduct and ethics. Integrates international, national, local and state policies and guidelines with professional Standards and competencies.
  • PLO 9: Holds specialist qualifications and demonstrates advanced specialist knowledge, skills and practice, integrating all the Standards competently and modelling leadership in the practice setting. 


On successful completion of this course you should be able to:

  1. Demonstrate reflective practice and writing skills requisite to a professional, investigative contribution to the disciplinary evidence-base
  2. Exhibit best practice in conference presentation and development of materials for peer appraisal
  3. Evaluate and apply research findings to nursing practice to improve patient safety and quality care outcomes
  4. Critically apply knowledge to discern policy and analyse development needs in contemporary and emerging nursing and health care practice domains
  5. Employ research and critical thinking processes to problem-solve in professional practice domains
  6. Identify strategies to learn from past and present experience (both of self and others) in order to extend professional and personal development and examine assumptions and prejudices that may impact on effective practice.


Overview of Learning Activities

Learning activities you will undertake during this course include a mixture of lectures, class discussion and self-directed learning exercises, including directed reading of academic literature to provide a solid theoretical basis to help you to achieve professional practice.

The assessment associated with this course will comprise formative and summative elements and incorporate a variety of assessment modes. Your assessments will primarily take the form of written work requiring reflection and critical analysis. Your participation in classroom or on line activities will also form part of your summative grade.

One seminar and weekly group writing circles / supervision.

Overview of Learning Resources

The learning resources associated with this course will include lecture notes, self-directed learning packages, and targeted readings taken from a range of both primary and secondary sources. Course material will be delivered via Echo, Discussion Board interaction and Blackboard Collaborate workshops. Practice learning activities will be provided in a variety of ways, including simulated learning activities.
