Course Description

This course will introduce you to drawing and model-making as a conceptualisation and communication tool. You will learn the design-drawing method of rapid visualisation to enable you to generate, reflect on, analyse and develop ideas and concepts. You will learn to use and apply form, shadow, line weight and freehand perspective to visualise and communicate objects, ideas, processes and systems for engineering, science, business and design. You will also learn to make 3-dimensional (3D) models in response to a brief. The focus of this unit is on the technical skills required to produce conceptual and ideas-driven design models

Objectives/Learning Outcomes/Capability Development

Upon successful completion of this course, you will be able to demonstrate these course learning outcomes:

  1. Apply fundamental design, drawing and fabrication skills to explore, develop and communicate visual ideas.
  2. Demonstrate a proficiency in the use of such skills as perspective, tone organisation and drawing from observation and from reference.
  3. Use visualisation techniques appropriate to your disciplinary focus.
  4. Through the keeping of a journal or sketchbook, develop a sense of your own unique visual identity.Analyse, reflect on and critique your own work and that of your peers.
  5. Analyse, reflect on and critique your own work and that of your peers

This course supports your development in this program learning outcome:

  • Apply advanced visualisation and representation skills (including use of drawing, modelling and colour) to support design practice.

Overview of Learning Activities

During this course you will participate in tutorial demonstrations and a range of practical learning activities, drawing and model-making workshops and documenting processes to explore and develop your design drawing skills within a drawing studio environment. You will undertake project work that will guide you through the design drawing and model-making process and enable you to develop specific capabilities. Your lecturer will help you tailor your project to suit your capabilities and disciplinary focus.

You will contribute to class critiques and receive verbal and/or written feedback from academic staff and your peers through a variety of consultations, presentations and tutorials. This feedback will help you track your learning against the specified learning outcomes for this course.

Overview of Learning Resources

RMIT University will provide you with a range of resources and tools to engage in this course, including studio and workshop facilities, online systems and professional equipment. A selected range of supplies is available, as well as support from technical staff. You will also have access to a wide range of online resources through RMIT Vietnam University Library.

Some projects that involve constructed outputs may require additional materials – this will be negotiated with the lecturer when the project scope is agreed.
