Course Description

This course aims to develop students’ competence as translators at a foundation level. Course content will focus on students gaining understanding of the process of translation and the different skills and techniques specifically applicable to different text types. Students will have opportunity to gain skills and knowledge to evaluate and apply conventions, standards, theories, concepts and approaches in simulated scenarios. Students will also apply cross cultural communicative skills in intrapersonal and interpersonal contexts. Students will be primarily trained to translate from English into a second language, with exposure to translating from a second language into English.


Objectives/Learning Outcomes/Capability Development

In this course you will develop the following program learning outcomes:

PLO1: Communicate effectively in a range of forms and in different international and cross-cultural contexts, using appropriate modes of communication including electronic, written, graphic, oral and aural forms with audiences within and external to the discipline. 

PLO4: Adapt and develop effective communication strategies to address linguistic diversity in the workplace. 

PLO5: Demonstrate creativity, critical thinking and innovation when identifying and solving problems in diverse contexts with in language related fields. 

PLO6: Identify, evaluate and critically analyse cultural, historical and theoretical practices which contextualise your professional practice and further study of language. 

PLO7: Evaluate and apply technology to increase efficiency and precision in language sensitive working contexts. 

PLO8: Critically analyse resources, evidence and personal experience to make ethical, socially and politically aware decisions related to language and intercultural interpretations and applications. 

PLO9: Effectively manage your own learning, developing skills in lifelong learning of languages and cross-cultural communication. 


Upon successful completion of this course your will be able to: 

CLO1: Produce translations of source texts that are accurate, coherent, and appropriate for document end use and assignment requirements. 

CLO2: Critically evaluate translations for accuracy, style and suitability for end use

CLO3: Use technology and the Internet to assist with the translation process to meet the end use requirements. 

CLO4: Investigate and apply relevant translation theories and approaches to your professional practice

CLO5: Review and edit translations done by a peer to provide a revised quality, professional translation.

You will be actively engaged in a range of learning activities such as lectures, tutorials, seminars, project work, class discussion, individual and group activities. Delivery may be face to face, online or a mix of both

You will be assessed on how well you meet the course's learning outcomes and on your development against the program learning outcomes. 

Assessment Tasks

Assessment Task 1: Simulated translating, 40% (CLO1, CLO2, CLO3, CLO4 and CLO5)

Assessment Task 2: Translation project, 40% (CLO1, CLO2, CLO3 and CLO5)

Assessment Task 3: Final evaluation essay, 20% (CLO2 and CLO4)
