SHAPE is a new elective focused on multidisciplinary collaboration, design thinking and construction strategies for current, real world projects. Building upon the learning and teaching outcomes of individual programs, you will be able to showcase and practice your professional skills and strengths within a multidisciplinary team, drawing on the experiences of industry experts.

Pre-requisite Courses and Assumed Knowledge and Capabilities

None. This course assumes you have developed undergraduate or postgraduate discipline knowledge across one of the following disciplines:

Construction Management, Project Management, Property and Valuation, Civil Engineering, Architecture, Landscape Architecture, Urban Planning, Urban Design and Interior Design.


Course Description

The Built Environment Learning Laboratory (BELL) provides a platform for students, teaching staff and industry to work collaboratively on live Built Environment projects on a local, regional and global scale. This course creates opportunities for you to work with the BELL and is designed to enhance your professional practice capabilities and profile. You will engage in diverse built environment professional practice projects that will shape the City of Melbourne and the broader urban environment. In collaboration with your peers and industry professionals, you will undertake multidisciplinary built environment projects. This course provides you with professionally connected learning opportunities as you experience real world application of your discipline in professional practice projects. In collaboration with your peers, teaching team and industry partners you will explore and critique diverse professional practices and cultures to achieve a common goal in industry setting.


Objectives/Learning Outcomes/Capability Development

This is a university wide elective course.  


·       Formulate appropriate and innovative responses and implementation strategies responding to project briefs

·       Critique and reflect on diverse professional practice perspectives and approaches across the Built Environment  to inform future practice

·       Analyse and evaluate how diverse professional perspectives and approaches inform project processes and outcomes

·       Apply and reflect on strategies for collaborating and working effectively in multidisciplinary project teams.


Overview of Learning Activities

You will be involved in a range of learning activities which are centred on the development and completion of collaborative projects. The learning activities may include: seminars, presentations, guest speakers, workshops, problem solving sessions, individual and group based reflection, receiving and providing feedback.

It is expected that you will regularly attend classes and collaborative group meetings where you will report and reflect upon individual and group progress on a regular basis, provide and receive constructive evaluation and engage in discussion of project based and multidisciplinary issues.


Overview of Learning Resources

RMIT will provide you with resources and tools for learning in this course through our online systems.

In this course you will be working on a range of projects and accessing resources specific to project work in your discipline. You will also investigate other disciplines and may need to access academic and industry resources relevant to those disciplines for example AV equipment and facilities, general and specialised computer labs.

Assessment 1: Professional Practice Portfolio 30%

Assessment 2: Weekly Workshop Outcomes Submission (20%)

This assessment will address the following course learning outcomes: CLO1, CLO4

 

Assessment 3: Project Package (50%)

This assessment will address the following course learning outcomes: CLO 1, CLO3, CLO 4
