Course Description

In second year, semester one, you will apply specialized art making knowledge and skills across a range of media and concepts to broaden the scope of your emerging individual studio practice. You will explore how artists initiate work through a range of starting points, trials and experiments. You will build on past experience and synthesize and apply new information to develop appropriate ways of selecting materials to enable the evolution of art works. You will examine relations between new and existing bodies of work with a focus upon developing a body of experimental and/or resolved art works.


Objectives/Learning Outcomes/Capability Development

In this course you will develop the following capabilities:

• Acquire knowledge of creative practice and theory and their applications to fine art

• Effectively communicate through artistic production across a range of media and studio methods with awareness of local and global contexts

• Invent, design and construct a pro-active and critically reflective arts practice, to build a career in the cultural and creative industries


Upon successful completion of this course, you will be able to:

  1. Employ a variety of conceptual strategies and studio processes to instigate independent works of art
  2. Realise the potential for chance/accidents and unforeseen possibilities by working and thinking laterally with ideas, materials and technologies
  3. Discuss the nature and significance of practice-led research
  4. Identify and reflect upon critical moments of learning and how you responded through your practice


Overview of Learning Activities

In this course you will engage with the studio as a process of creation and as a site of practice and enquiry. It is studio based which means your learning will be activated through experimenting, exploring, composing, texting, envisioning, observing, and playing with a range of materials and art making processes to initiate a studio practice.

There will be opportunities for you to learn through making works, experimenting with materials, practice based research, workshops, presentations demonstrations, lectorials, gallery and site visits, reflective writing, group discussions, consultations on your studio work and occupational health and safety demonstrations.

You will receive verbal and/or written feedback from academic staff and peers through a variety of consultations and tutorials on your studio work. You will also have access to online materials, instructional tutorials, readings and interviews with artists through Canvas and the https://artschoolportal.com

You will present your work in a series of open feedback sessions with academic staff and your peers. Feedback sessions are designed to support the resolution of your artwork, as well as to facilitate the development of your ability to analyse and interpret art works.


Overview of Learning Resources

RMIT will provide you with resources and tools for learning in this course through our online systems. You will be given a studio space for the development of your artworks as well as access to studio technicians. You will also have access to a range of facilities across the school to support your area of practice including light fabrication workshops, AV studios, computer labs, AV recording equipment, ceramics and gold and silver-smithing studios, large format photo printing facilities, and printmaking studios. RMIT will also provide you with resources and tools for learning in this course through our online systems.

Overview of Assessment

You will be assessed on how well you meet the course’s learning outcomes and on your development against the program learning outcomes. You will be given feedback on all your assessment tasks.

Formative Assessment:

You will be given formative feedback on the work you produce in week six.

Summative Assessment:

1.Folio & presentation of resolved studio works 40 % LO1, LO2

2.Folio of practice-led research, developmental and support materials 40 % LO1, LO2, LO3, LO4,

3. Critical reflection and response to feedback 20 % LO5, LO6
