Course Description
In this course you will apply advanced knowledge, skills and methods of production appropriate to the craft of your discipline to establish self-initiated ways of making artworks. The focus will also be on developing openness to new technologies, skills and methods of production. You will consolidate your learning by developing self-directed studio artwork proposals and projects to express and communicate your conceptual ideas. You will employ an advanced working knowledge of the studio as a site for art making and professional practice.
Objectives/Learning Outcomes/Capability Development
- Effective communication through artistic production across a range of media and studio methods with awareness of and sensitivity to local and global contexts
- Engage in continued learning and independent practice, in response to developments in technology, culture and artistic production
Upon successful completion of this course, you will be able to:
- Apply new technologies, skills and methods of production to making artworks.
- Employ technically proficient skills that relate directly to your individual practice
- Express conceptual ideas through appropriate materials and technologies.
- Respond to critical feedback from lecturers and peers and discuss how this feedback has influenced and/or expanded your art making processes
Overview of Learning Activities
In this course you will engage with studio technologies, practice and enquiry. You will learn and use techniques and processes of making art works in ways that complement and inform your studio specialization. You will also employ analytical, technical and interpretative processes to critically evaluate the use of technologies for creative practice using a range of reflective learning tools.
Through workshops, demonstrations, seminars, lectures and group discussions you will engage in a range of learning activities that explore skills, tools and methods such as the hand made, digital, electronic, mechanical & workshop equipment & processes, and hardware & software. You will also explore safe working practices, industry standards and extend your knowledge, language and vocabulary of technology.
You will receive verbal and/or written feedback from academic staff and peers through a variety of consultations and tutorials on your studio work. You will also have access to online materials, instructional tutorials, readings and interviews with artists through Canvas and the https://artschoolportal.com

Melbourne Campus RMIT University will provide you with a range of resources and tools to engage in this course, including options for studio, technological and workshop facilities, online systems and professional equipment specific to your projects and requirements. A select range of art supplies is made available to you, as well as support from technical staff. You will also have access to a wide range of online and hardcopy resources through RMIT University library. RMIT University is in close proximity to a broad range of galleries and cultural venues that you will be expected to visit during the course of your studies. Professional workshops, labs and suppliers are also readily accessible.
Hong Kong Campus Hong Kong Art School will provide you with a range of resources and tools to engage in this course, including studio and workshop facilities, online systems and professional equipment specific to your studio area. You will have access to a selected range of supplies, as well as support from technical staff. Hong Kong Art School is in close proximity to a broad range of galleries and cultural venues that you will be expected to visit as part of your course. Overview of Assessment
You will be assessed on how well you meet the course’s learning outcomes and on your development against the program learning outcomes. You will be given feedback on all your assessment tasks.

- Folio of resolved work in response to studio proposal 40% LO1, LO2, LO3
- Folio of practice-led research materials 40% LO1, LO2, LO3, LO4
- Critical reflection on process, materials and artworks 20% LO3, LO4
