Course Description

In this course you will build on knowledge of aircraft forces and fluid systems and study the principles of aerodynamics governing aircraft flight. The course will focus on the application of a broad range of analytical and computational techniques with the objective to predict aerodynamic characteristics of aerospace components and aircraft configurations.

This course contributes to the following program learning outcomes:

1.1 Comprehensive, theory based understanding of the underpinning natural and physical sciences and the engineering fundamentals applicable to the engineering discipline

2.2 Fluent application of engineering techniques, tools and resources


Upon successful completion of the course, you should be able to:

  1. relate concepts of aerodynamics and associated fluid mechanics to aircraft design and operation ]
  2. apply basic aerodynamic principles to analyse the aerodynamic characteristics of idealised representations of aircraft
  3. analyse the aerodynamic behaviour of real three-dimensional aircraft wings using both analytical and numerical methodologies
  4. identify limitations of the different mathematical models for predicting aerodynamic characteristics
  5. apply theoretical compressible flow concepts to the analysis of high-speed aircraft and engines
