Digital Design 1 is an introductory course that provides an overview of the diverse roles of digital technology in the global design context. This course also introduces the software programs you will use to explore digital technology in the context of fashion.
The key objective of this course is to establish a foundation to consider your creative aesthetic and for the expression of this in your work as a designer, by exploring how you might incorporate digital technology.
You will learn how digital technology is currently enabling fashion and product designers in the global context and you will also consider the potential for new applications of digital technology in the field of design.
Objectives/Learning Outcomes/Capability Development
In this course you will develop the following program learning outcomes:
- Apply logical and critical thinking in resolving a range of applied design and technology issues in a fashion context.
- Conceptualise, integrate and organise information in order to resolve complex issues related to fashion design and technology.
Upon successful completion of this course, you will be able to:
- Consider your creative practice in the context of digital design and technology.
- Incorporate your own worldview into your creative outputs by designing fashion products that align with global best practice.
- Communicate your perspectives of contemporary and future fashion practice in a professional manner.
- Create a product using digital technology.
Overview of Learning Activities
You will gain an understanding of the diversity of digital design and how the use of new technologies might impact their future fashion practice.
You will learn how software programs might be utilised to inform their digital communication strategies, as well as how digital design can be enabled through the use of various software programs including Photoshop, Illustrator and Rhino.
Classes will be conducted in an environment that may include computer labs, and will include at various times a guest lecture.

Overview of Assessment
You will be assessed on how well you meet the course’s learning outcomes and on your development against the program learning outcomes.
Assessment may include:
Task 1: (20%) Research plan for product design.
Task 2: (40%) Design document for Laser cutting and Rhino CLO: 3
Task 3 : (40%) Manufacture a 3D artifact and Laser cut an accessory
Feedback will be given on all assessment tasks.
