Course Description

This course will expand upon previous studies in BIOL2480 Introductory Human Biosciences and develop your understanding of musculoskeletal anatomy, muscle function, and cardiorespiratory physiology. It will further contribute to the foundational knowledge required for program-specific application of anatomical and physiological information.

Topics covered will include:

  • Bone structure and the skeletal system
  • Joint classifications and functions
  • Gross anatomy of major muscle groups
  • Physiology of skeletal muscle contraction
  • Cardiovascular function and haemodynamics
  • Mechanisms of ventilation, respiration and gas exchange

  • Comprehensive, theory based understanding of the underpinning natural and physical sciences and the engineering fundamentals applicable to the engineering discipline (PLO 1.1)

  • Apply knowledge of the underlying principles and concepts of Exercise and Sport Science (PLO 1)

Upon successful completion of this course you should be able to:

  1. Identify the major bones and bony landmarks of the axial and appendicular skeleton.
  2. Classify the major joints of the body and the types of movement they permit.
  3. Identify major skeletal muscles, their general attachments, and the movements they produce.
  4. Explain the physiological basis of muscle contraction.
  5. Describe how the heart and blood vessels work together to regulate cardiac output and blood pressure.
  6. Explain the mechanisms that regulate gas exchange and transport.

This Course will use a range of learning activities including lecture recordings, anatomy laboratory classes, online resources and self-directed learning.

Learning resources in this course include:

  • Recommended readings from text books and online sources
  • On campus practical classes in the Digital Human Biosciences Facility (students will have access to cadaveric specimens, digital technologies, bones and models)

Online resources will be made available via the RMIT Learning Management System (LMS).
