The curating of popular, contemporary and traditional arts and cultural content occurs in many contexts including in galleries and museums, public art programs, special events and arts festivals. Through discussions on various local, national and international case studies, expanded ideas of curation will be considered from the historical aspects through to the contemporary implementation of this form of curating. Through guest speakers, case studies and literature, various traditional, popular and contemporary art forms will be explored to consider and engage with how artistic programs are curated.
Objectives/Learning Outcomes/Capability Development
- Attain appropriate and relevant arts management knowledge, with the ability to critique, use and apply that knowledge across a range of situations, enabling effective judgments in dealing with new and emerging issues in the field
- Carry out self-directed learning and independent research to develop your individual arts management practice and locate your work globally within an appropriate conceptual and theoretical context
- Critically evaluate and make judgments on the social, legal and international aspects of actions and decisions in arts management, with an understanding of professional expectations and ethical requirements
- Communicate through practice and policy in a sustainable manner with a wide range of audiences in multidisciplinary means with an appreciation of communication as a personal and cultural practice
- Demonstrate the skills of research, analysis and presentation within professional and academic fields
- Engage critically in theoretical, historical, social, legal, environmental and cultural contexts with reference to the arts management industry context
- Demonstrate the capacity to work independently, as well as with others in group and team activities and decision-making processes to seek innovative and critically reflective solutions and outcomes
- Engage critically, creatively and effectively using available resources to solve arts management issues and reflect on the process and outcomes.
Upon successful completion of this course, you will be able to:
- Examine and evaluate multiple curatorial contexts and practices
- Critically discuss and review innovation and experimentation in expanded curatorial and exhibition practices
- Identify and apply ideas and practices concerning expanded contemporary curating
- Critically reflect upon the issues involved in conceptualising, developing and presenting expanded contemporary exhibitions
Overview of Learning Activities
You will engage in learning that involves a range of activities, both face to face and online, such as seminars, presentations by industry professionals, student presentations, discussions, group work and independent research. Individual assessment tasks will require you to develop your own expanded curatorial project, with activities which will require you to survey the curatorial landscape in Melbourne and research, develop and plan your own curatorial project.
Classes are designed to be a safe and open forum for the discussion of ideas, dilemmas, challenges and opportunities. Classes cater for all levels of experience and are a place for constructive critique, group and individual learning. Mutual support, sharing of knowledge and full participation is strongly encouraged. You will require: independent research skills including the ability to find references beyond the reading provided as well as the ability to use RMIT library and online databases; established writing skills including an understanding of different genres within formal academic writing and the ability to cite references according to required styles (e.g. APA, Harvard); a confident ability to uphold the values of academic integrity and avoid plagiarism; critical and creative thinking skills; problem-solving skills; verbal presentation abilities; and the ability to work productively within a team.

Speakers may provide you with references and your lecturer may set reading for seminars. Course-connected skill development classes and tutorials are available to you if you need them.
