Course Description

In this course you will engage in and explore conceptual and technical methods applicable to Textile Design Illustration and Surface. You will learn about drawing and illustration practices through the investigation of wet and dry media, mark-making and paper based techniques while working with traditional, hand and digital processes.

You will learn about textile design elements and explore image making, motif, texture, pattern, composition and repeat while considering range building, colourways, design development and specifications for commercial textiles.

Through media play and iterative ideation you will develop textile design concepts, outcomes and support materials to communicate your concepts. You will also gain an overview of contemporary, cultural and historical perspectives of commercial textile design production to inform your design direction.

As this is a program option course, only Course Learning Outcomes are applicable.


Course Learning Outcomes 

Upon successful completion of this course, you will be able to:

CLO1: Identify and discuss contemporary, cultural and historical examples of textile design production.

CLO2: Demonstrate skills and knowledge through the investigation of media and mark-making, image and motif, composition, texture, pattern, colour and range building.

CLO3: Create paper based textile design repeat concepts.

Your learning will be facilitated via a range of in-class and online activities that will require both individual and collaborative engagement. Class activities promote your ability to explore design, investigate, analyse and understand textile design practice.

You will be assessed on how well you meet the course learning outcomes and on your development against the program learning outcomes.

Assessment tasks are directly aligned with each Course Learning Outcome.  They are as follows:

Assessment 1: Explore, Play & Develop: 50%
CLOs: 1 & 2


Assessment 2: Refine, Design & Apply: 50%
CLOs: 1, 2 & 3
