Course Description

In this course, you will undertake a project in which you will apply your knowledge and skill in response to a specific design brief. The project possibilities are based on different concepts, techniques, or genres of textile design practice, and include aspects of research, design development, communication and realised textile samples and prototypes. 

Your project will include exploration of potential stakeholders, expectations of functional or technical requirements, and the necessary design approaches and techniques that are applicable to a specific industry. In this way, the project allows you to experience and test specialist design practices developed through the creation of your own design ‘persona’.


Objectives/Learning Outcomes/Capability Development

Program Learning Outcomes 

In this course you will develop the following program learning outcomes:

PLO1: Demonstrate broad knowledge of textile design creation and production with depth and expertise in one or more areas of practice.

PLO2: Develop conceptual, creative, technical and digital skills to deepen and synthesise knowledge of textile design applications and technologies.

PLO4: Critically evaluate and reflect on theoretical and practical textile design principles and techniques to identify and solve problems in diverse contexts.


Course Learning outcomes 

Upon successful completion of this course, you will be able to:

CLO1: Develop and engage efficient and professional working practices in order to plan, produce and deliver textile design project results.    

CLO2: Apply conceptual, critical or creative thinking as well as advancing theoretical and technical knowledge to inform innovative design proposals and solutions to specifically directed project briefs.   

CLO3: Critically reflect on individual design practice, analysing research within a broader global context.

CLO4: Demonstrate skills and fluency in articulating and communicating ideas, arguments and rationale to effectively present design proposals and solutions.

Your learning will be facilitated via a range of in-class and online activities that will require both individual and collaborative engagement. Class activities promote your ability to explore design, investigate, analyse and understand textile  practice.

Overview of Assessment

You will be assessed on how well you meet the course learning outcomes and on your development against the program learning outcomes.

Assessment tasks are directly aligned with each Course Learning Outcome.  They are as follows:

Assessment Task 1:  Project Proposal (20%)
CLOs: 1 & 2 

Assessment Task 2: Design Project (50%)
CLOs: 1, 2, 3 & 4

Assessment Task 3: Design Communication (30%)
CLOs: 1, 3 & 4
