Pre-requisite Courses and Assumed Knowledge and Capabilities
This course will introduce you to accounting practices and challenge you to consider how these might be impacted by the introduction of blockchain technology. You will also be introduced to institutional cryptoeconomics as a general framework to understand the blockchain economy and consider some of the political and ethical challenges generated by this new technology.
In a project-based approach, you will be challenged to explore real world applications of blockchain technology as they resolve economic, social and political problems. You will interpret and analyse a range of accountability approaches and the implications of financial performance (measured in terms of cash flows; income statement and balance sheet performance) and compare and contrast approaches used in traditional and blockchain economies.
Objectives/Learning Outcomes/Capability Development
On successful completion of this course you should be able to:
- Distinguish blockchain practices and issues relating to distributed ledger technology.
- Illustrate the risks and rewards of implementing blockchain solutions into a relevant business context, using accounting techniques and methodologies.
- Develop strategies and a project action plan to implement solutions that are responsive to identified problems and opportunities.
- Formulate solutions that demonstrate sound financial acumen and an understanding of financial management applications.
Overview of Learning Activities
This course is delivered as a blend of face-to-face activities (such as: workshops, lectures and group or industry-based tasks) and online learning. Learning will be focused around the completion of a 12-week project, which will be supported through in-class and online activities. This may include: project development activities; guest speakers/expert commentators; prescribed readings; researching and analysing specific information; solving problems; producing artefacts; proposing solutions; seeking and providing peer feedback; and reflective praxis.
