Real kindness is an exchange with essentially unpredictable consequences- Phillips & Taylor

The exhibition Shelter: On Kindness is an experiment, the results and impact of which as a show will continue to resonate beyond the moment of material completion of the artworks.

Presented by RMIT Gallery in association with ArtPlay and Melbourne International Arts Festival, the exhibition Shelter: On Kindness examines ideas of nurture and kindness through the filter of the writings of Adam Phillips and historian Barbara Taylor in On Kindness (Penguin 2007).

Curated by Suzanne Davies, Vanessa Gerrans and Sarah Morris, the exhibition explores philosophical and material concepts of shelter through the work of 50 participating architects, artists, writers and philosophers, including: Charles Anderson, Robert Bridgewater, Gregory Burgess and Pip Stokes, Peter Corrigan, William Eicholtz, Terunobu Fujimori and Jun Sakaguchi, Stephen Haley, Alan Johnston, LAB Architecture Studio, Ronnie Lacham, March Studio, Paul Memmott, Murdo Macdonald, John R Neeson, NMBW Architecture Studio, Adam Phillips and Barbara Taylor, RMIT Indigenous Arts Unit and Alan Saunders.

The exhibition brief was not prescriptive. Participants were asked to respond instinctively to the notions of shelter and kindness. They have had to work together, demonstrating their ability to accommodate each other’s desires and needs.

What will be the result? Come and see for yourself – the completed exhibition will be officially unveiled by Professor Margaret Gardner AO, Vice Chancellor and President RMIT University from 6-8 pm 7 October.

We invite everyone to come along and celebrate this vast and complex exhibition with us. Share the participants’ vision of kindness. Marvell at the shelters and enjoy the beauty – and the very different works that have been created.
