Instruction on the membership of the Academic Promotions Panel for each of the levels of promotion.

Instruction steps and actions

The membership of the Academic Promotions Panel can include any academic staff member from any RMIT location and composition of the panel for each of the levels of promotion will normally be as follows:

For applicants applying for promotion to Level E, the three Academic Pro Vice-Chancellors will be on the promotion panel.

Nominee must be at least at promotion level being sought.

Number of full panel members

  • All members nominated by DVCE will be from a pool of candidates consisting of previous successful applicants, previous members of panel and any new members as seen appropriate by the DVCE.
  • DVCE nominations will be in consultation with Chair, Academic Board
  • All panels will be gender balanced
  • All panels will strive to represent the diversity of demographic at RMIT

Quorum

Quorum is half of the number of full panel members plus one full panel member and does not include non-voting members.

External Assessors

  • External Associate Professor / Professor from another institution approved by the relevant Pro Vice-Chancellor.
  • An expert external to the University approved by the relevant Pro Vice-Chancellor.

External assessors provide an ‘in-confidence’ assessment of the application, rather than serving as full panel members. The panel will seek their views but the panel itself will exercise the final judgment. For applicants to full Professor the External Professor must be a full Professor (not Associate Professor).

An independent moderator, within RMIT, nominated by Deputy Vice-Chancellor Education in consultation with Chair, Academic Board.

The moderator will review a sample of applications to ensure consistency in panel scores rather than serve as a full panel member.

Contacting panel members

All correspondence to the panel must be made via the Chair. Normally, the names of individual panel members will not be disclosed to applicants.
