The Horne Prize

The late Professor Donald Horne

An award celebrating a journalist, writer, social critic, and academic who became one of Australia's best known public intellectuals.

Aesop and The Saturday Paper present a major new essay award honouring the late Professor Donald Horne for his exceptional contribution to Australian letters and you’re invited to enter.

The competition

Celebrating narrative non-fiction, the Horne Prize is looking for essays of exceptional quality that take cues from Donald Horne’s rigorous exploration of Australian culture. Open to all Australian writers, your essay should be of no more than 3000 words, addresses some part of the theme ‘Australian life,’ be based on reportage, and bring light to a person or issue that helps us to understand who we are.

Prizes

The Horne Prize – a major award valued at $15,000.

Dates

  • Entries close 31 October
  • Shortlist announced 30 November
  • Winner announced and winning essay published in The Saturday Paper 24 December
