Asia@RMIT - Bangladesh
Meaning "Country of Bengal", Bangladesh is situated in Southern Asia, bordering the Bay of Bengal, Burma (Myanmar) and India. It was established in 1971 following the Bangladesh independence war, with the secession of East Pakistan to become the independent nation of Bangladesh. With most of the country situated on deltas of large rivers flowing from the Himalayas, Bangladesh is subject to annual monsoon floods and cyclones. It is the eighth most populous country in the world, and has a high rate of poverty.
RMIT based research focusing on Bangladesh includes an investigation into access to rural health facilities, an analysis of the country's urban poverty reduction, and an exploration of the career aspirations of educated women.
