Bryan Colling, Exchange to Fashion Institute of Technology, America
Bryan's studies at FIT in New York allowed him to explore and get to know Manhattan like a local. Being exposed to retail and fashion contexts not available in Australia has ensured Bryan's global understanding has only grown stronger.
"It is one of the best experiences you will ever have."
RMIT Program: Associate Degree in Fashion and Textiles
Global Program: Exchange
Destination: New York, America
"I decided to go on exchange to New York as a way to really round out my degree with international experience that would strengthen my CV. The fact that I was able to go to FIT was really exciting as I'd heard many great things about their fashion programs. I stayed in a dorm on 34th Street in the heart of Manhattan, which was a few short blocks to campus on 27th. This allowed me the ability to really explore and get to know Manhattan and the surrounding boroughs as if I was a New York native.
The best part of my exchange experience was probably just being in New York and being able to experience all the things the city that never sleeps has to offer- which is definitely a lot!
My studies did take up a lot of time, but the subjects I took were really interesting and thorough, and exposed me to retail and fashion contexts that don't exist in Australia. The way the industry works over here is different, and has only made my global understanding of the fashion business stronger and more nuanced.
Other places I traveled to during my exchange included Philadelphia (only a short 2hr bus ride) and the Jersey Shore once summer arrived.
Overall, I would definitely recommend an exchange semester for anyone thinking of applying, as it really gets you out of your comfort zone and strengthens your overall university experience."
