Extension of candidature

Candidates applying for an extension beyond maximum duration of candidature are placed ‘At Risk’ if they are not already ‘At Risk’.

Applications for extension beyond maximum duration of candidature must be made using the University ‘Extension of candidature beyond maximum duration (PDF 99KB)’ form.

The application must also be supported by a Candidate Action Support Plan (CASP) located at CASP form (PDF 125KB).

All applications for extensions beyond maximum duration of candidature should be made at least two (2) months prior to maximum duration.

Extensions to the maximum duration of candidature are not automatic and are strictly capped. PhD candidates may be allowed no more than six months extension in total (full-time) or 12 months extension in total (part-time). Master by Research candidates may be allowed no more than 3 months extension in total (full-time) or 6 months extension in total (part-time). Candidates who do not submit by the end of their extended submission date will have their candidature cancelled due to expiry of their maximum duration of candidature. Please refer to the HDR Candidature procedure section 6.7.1.

Separate applications for extensions to scholarships must be made to the relevant scholarship administrators Notification of extension of candidature approvals for international candidates must be forwarded to RMIT International in order to facilitate Government reporting requirements.

Candidates whose candidature has been lapsed for more than one (1) semester or who voluntarily discontinued may reapply for admission by following the standard admissions process.

If readmitted, the candidate will be required to complete at least the minimum duration of candidature from the original enrolment date before being permitted to submit a thesis/project. Resumption of any scholarship provided during the previous candidature is not possible.

Readmission will not normally be approved if candidates have exceeded their maximum duration of candidature.
