Doctoral Consortium

In 2013, the ACIS Doctorial Consortium will be located at International House. International House is located approximately two kilometres to the north of the Melbourne CDB and is situated on Royal Parade, a beautiful nineteenth century tree-lined boulevard. The doctorial consortium will provide 20 current PhD students the opportunity to focus on their PhD with experience researchers as mentors.

Instructions on how to apply to participate

There are limited places available for the Doctoral Consortium at ACIS 2013 to be held in International House, University of Melbourne on December 2 and 3. Students will stay in International House and meals will be provided.

All students enrolled in PhDs are eligible to apply. However due to a restriction on the number of places, normally only one student from each organisational unit in a university will be accepted into the program.

PhD students applying to participate in the Doctorial Consortium should be into the middle part of their PhD. The most benefit that can be gained is for those students who have a clear proposal accepted/confirmed, a Literature Review completed and who have a clear understanding and justification for the research methodology they will use in their PhD. The advisors in the Doctoral Consortium will focus on assisting these students with critique, with tips about moving the thesis forward, tips about dealing with traps in the methodology and about how to write the thesis. There will also be assistance in learning how to publish during the PhD journey. And in knowing when it is ‘good enough’ to submit.

To apply

  1. Prepare a cover sheet with your name, university, title of the research, date of commencement of the research, names of supervisors.
  2. You need to write a 10 page Max (11pt, single space, Ariel font) proposal (excludes references). The page limit must be adhered to to be considered. This proposal should clearly state the topic title, the context of the research, the research question to be addressed, rationale for the research, the theoretical foundations of the research, and an associated summary of key literature, and a statement of the intended or already ongoing methodology to be used or in use.
  3. There will also be a 3 minute PhD presentation (3 mins max) at the start of the DC and you therefore must include a single slide to facilitate a clear understanding of your PhD topic. There are to be no embedded slides in the single slide. The 3 minute presentation is an exercise in developing academic and research communication skills by reducing your complex research down to simple statements (without dumbing your ideas down). You will present a clear, concise, yet engaging presentation of your research project in three (3) minutes.
  4. Send all of the Cover Sheet, the Proposal, the ONE slide for the 3 Min presentation and a letter of endorsement from the Head of Department/School to same place as the Research Papers by September 20, 2013. Submit here

Sunday Dec 1: Accommodation booked at International house (Doctorial Candidates pay), 6:30 pm – 9 pm Dinner and Social gathering (Sponsored by Conference)

Monday Dec 2: Accommodation booked at International house (Doctorial Candidates pay), 9 am – 5:30 pm First day of discussions and presentations, 6 pm – 9 pm Dinner and Dinner presentations (Sponsored by ACPHIS).

Tuesday Dec 3: 9 am – 4 pm Second day of presentation and feedback.
