Course Description

This unit of competency describes the skills and knowledge required for workers in the health care setting to comply with infection control policies and procedures. All procedures must be carried out in accordance with current infection control guidelines, Australian and New Zealand Standards for maintaining infection control and the policies and procedures of the health care establishment.
This unit acknowledges the importance of complying with an effective infection control strategy that ensures client safety, maintains personal protection and prevents the transmission of infections from person to person within the health care environment.
All tasks must be carried out in accordance with State or Territory legislative requirements that affect work practices of the health care establishment and/or health care worker.

5.1 Demarcate and maintain clean and contaminated zones in all aspects of health care work
5.2 Confine records, materials and medicaments to a well-designated clean zone

6.1 Wear appropriate personal protective clothing and equipment in accordance with occupational health and safety policies and procedures when handling waste
6.2 Separate waste at the point where it has been generated and dispose of into waste containers that are colour coded and identified
6.3 Store clinical or related waste in an area that is accessible only to authorised persons
6.4 Handle, package, label, store, transport and dispose of waste appropriately to minimize potential for contact with the waste and to reduce the risk to the environment from accidental release
6.5 Dispose of waste safely in accordance with policies and procedures of the organisation and legislative requirements
7.1 Wear personal protective clothing and equipment during cleaning procedures
7.2 Remove all dust, dirt and physical debris from work surfaces
7.3 Clean all work surfaces with a neutral detergent and warm water solution before and after each session or when visible soiled
7.4 Decontaminate equipment requiring special processing in accordance with quality management systems to ensure full compliance with cleaning, disinfection and sterilisation protocols
7.5 Dry all work surfaces before and after use
7.6 Replace surface covers where applicable
7.7 Maintain and store cleaning equipment


Details of Learning Activities

Unit HLTIN301C is a prerequisite unit for the following units of competency:

  • HLTIN302B Process reusable instruments & equipment in health work
  • HLTDA303C Prepare for and assist in oral health care procedures
  • HLTDA304C Assist with dental radiography
  • HLTDA306C Assist with administration in dental practice
  • Failure to complete the unit with a CA (competency achieved) will result in non-progression of the student in the certificate III dental assisting program until competency is achieved.

Facilitator led classroom based lecture program (microbiology & clinical infection control in dental practice)

Demonstration and class discussion/workshop on Standard Precautions - PPE (personal protective equipment placement and removal)

Facilitator led practical clinical demonstration & simulation activity in barrier placement, non-touch retrieval techniques, environmental cleaning, HVE placement for efficient aerosol management , hand hygiene - washing & application/use of alcohol based hand rubs (ABHR) in the work environment.

Activity using UV lights for demonstration of effective hand washing technique

Practical clinical practise, peer evaluation/feedback session in barrier placement and removal, efficient use of HVE (high velocity evacuation) for minimisation of aerosol, practise in PPE placement and removal, practise in hand washing technique/use of ABHR.

Self managed research to support completion of Workbook and Third Party Evidence Document to assist consolidation of underpinning skills and knowledge

Clinical assessment session with RMIT Assessor

Written assessment

Work based learning and experience in clinical infection control skills and knowledge and application and relevance of these in the dental industry.
 


Teaching Schedule

Teaching Schedule:

Block 1, days 1, 2 & 3

  • 1 hour Facilitator led classroom based lecture program -  introduction to microbiology & clinical infection control in dental practice
  •  3 hour Facilitator led, classroom based lecture program in microbiology & clinical infection control in dental practice.
  • 1 hour -  Facilitator led demonstration and class discussion/workshop on each individual item of PPE (personal protective equipment placement, removal & importance of each piece of equipment and correct times to implement hand hygiene during PPE protocol)
  • 1 hour -  practical clinical demonstration & simulation in barrier placement, non-touch retrieval techniques,environmental cleaning,suction and waterline management and HVE placement for effective aerosol management
  • 2 hour - practical activities including hand hygiene demonstration (handwashing & ABHR) and student participation in activity using UV light system, clinical practise in barrier placement and removal technique, clinical practise in PPE placement and removal.
  • 1 hour tutorial - discussion of summary of class work - main themes and effective completion of workbook and preparation for successful assessment outcome in this unit of competency
  • 10 hours - self managed research using prescribed and recommended texts to support completion of compulsory workbook and third party evidence document and consolidation of underpinning knowledge to support positive outcomes in practical and written assessment for this unit of competency. The workbook and third aprty evidence document are available to all students enrolled in this unit of competency for access via RMIT Blackboard program C3202.. 

Please note:The Third Party Evidence Document has been designed for workplace implementation. Completion of the document provides a student with the opportunity to gain constructive feedback from Supervisors/mentors and allows the Supervisor/mentor to evaluate the student’s progress and provide the RMIT teacher/assessor with any relevant feedback as to the progress and application and development of the student’s skills and knowledge in infection control in the workplace.

The workbook and third party evidence document are aligned directly with the desired learning outcomes of this unit of competency and as such will provide students with study direction and focus in work based training.


Block 2, Day 2 -

15 minute practical clinical assessment session with RMIT Assessor. Written feedback will be provided to student and the workplace supervisor (only if student on traineeship) following the assessment outcome.

45 minute written assessment - developed from all 7 Elements/Learning Outcomes for Unit HLTIN301C

Special Consideration must be lodged prior to or within 48 hours of the scheduled assessment time or assessment submission date and is not granted automatically on application.

Student must present Student Identification Card to RMIT Assessor to undertake assessment.

To undertake practical clinical demonstration class work and evaluation and or assessment students MUST present for the assessment process as follows:

In appropriate clinical attire(no jeans or tracksuit pants, no bare midriff, no singlet tops)
Fully covered in leather(not suede) clinical footwear (this is a compulsory worksafe requirement)
Hair to be contained by tying back or in appropriate hair cover.
No artificial fingernails to be worn
No nail varnish to be worn. The wearing of henna is acceptable.
Short, clean fingernails
No jewellery to be worn on the hands or wrists. Wedding rings or jewellery that cannot be removed for cultural reasons must be taped with an appropriate waterproof tape
All cuts/ skin abrasions on the hands or wrists must be covered with a waterproof dressing

A student that is non-compliant with any of the above requirements will not be permitted to undertake clinical evaluation or clinical assessment at the scheduled time.The student will be rescheduled to undertake the assessment at a later date provided the student is within their RMIT enrolment period.

 

Assessment Matrix:

  • Full completion and submission of workbook responses and evidence of work based training via third party evidence document by due date for submission = weight in assessment of this unit =10% 
  • Note: submission of the workbook and third party evidence documents by the due date for submission is a prerequisite to undertake the practical and written assessments.
  • Failure to submit the workbook and third party evidence by the due date without special consideration will result in the student being ineligible to undertake the practical and written assessment as scheduled. This may impact on the student’s progression in the certificate III dental assisting program
  • PX pass result for practical assessment = weight in assessment of this unit = 45%
  • PX pass result  70% or above result for written assessment = weight in assessment of this unit =45%
  • Total of above listed assessments =  weight 100%

Competency Achieved CA  in Unit HLTIN301C as follows:

  • Attendance and participation in the associated HLTIN301C class work
  • Full completion and submission of workbook responses and evidence of work based training via signed third party evidence document by due date for submission = 10%
  • PX pass result for practical assessment = 45%
  • PX pass result 70% or above result for written assessment = 45%

NYC (not yet competent result) managed as follows: The result will be directly managed by the Program Coordinator via appointment and in consultation with the assessor, the student and  the workplace supervisor/employer (if student is on traineeship).

The student will be provided with ONE opportunity to achieve competence following verbal and written feedback from the RMIT Assessor and Program Coordinator.

Failure to achieve a CA competent result for Unit HLTIN301C within the student’s RMIT enrolment period will result in re-enrolment in the unit incurring fees. Re-enrolment may include but is not limited to a return to class work, completion of all associated task and assessment work relevant to the unit at the time of re-enrolment and third party evidence declaration to support evidence of work based training.

Please note: Successful completion of Unit HLTIN301C is a prerequisite for Units HLTIN302B Process reusable instruments & equipment in health work, HLTDA303C Prepare for and assist with oral health care procedures, HLTDA304C Assist with dental radiography and HLTDA306C Assist with administration in dental practice.

Failure to complete Unit HLTIN301C with a CA (competency achieved) will result in non-progression of the student in the certificate III dental assisting program until competency is achieved.

Other Information

This unit of competency is delivered against current industry standards.

Students are required to support the learning outcomes for Unit HLTIN301C with work based experience and further self managed research to support positive outcomes in this Unit.

It is incumbent upon all students to be familiar with the current ADA Infection Control Guidelines Document second edition, 2012.

The application of Infection Control in dental practice by the student must be routine and consistent to support evidence of competency in  the 7 Elements/Learning Outcomes for Unit HLTIN301C.

A student may find it beneficial to seek further clinical experience outside their place of employment in order to achieve the required Learning Outcomes for Unit HLTIN301C.
