Learning Outcomes

1.1 Identify hazards in the work area, and take action taken to control risk

Details of Learning Activities

Facilitator led HLTOHS200A Participate in OHS Processes: [Safety in the workplace, risks and hazards and maintain a safe workplace] via Power Point presentation and classroom discussion and small group activity. 

       Topic 1: The legislative & organisational framework for OHS:  [What is workplace safety? , Laws, regulations & codes of practice and Legal requirements in the workplace].

      Topic 2: Risk management : [The “Take 5” approach to risk management , The difference between hazard and risk , Near misses and accidents , Risk Assessment , Risk (hierarchy of ) control , Reporting  and Risk management (The Take 5 approach) ]

      Topic 3: Safe workplace practices: [Housekeeping , Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) , Managing stress and fatigue , Manual handling , Ergonomics , Handling chemicals, Infection control (introduction), Radiation, and  Safety signs ].

     Topic 4: Emergency procedures: [Evacuation procures, Fire, Medical emergencies and first aid, Bomb threat and Natural disasters]

Clinical experience in OHS issues in the students workplace.

Self managed research and completion of Oral Presentation.

Participation in Block 2 day 2, Students gain information of OHS issues in other dental practices during the oral presentations.

Students complete and submit Reflection Feedback of Oral presentations.

Teaching Schedule

Block 1, Day 3 OHS Lecture Morning Session (09:00 to 13:00 - 4 hours)

Four hour facilitator led classroom based lecture program via Power Point presentation, classroom discussion and small group activities.

Students present their OHS oral presentations of their dental practice, post oral presentation class

Overview of Assessment

A variety of assessments are incorporated in this unit of competency including:
• Observation in the work place
• Evidence of essential knowledge and understanding may be provided by: traditional or online (computer-based) assessment or written assignments/projects
• Case study and scenario as a basis for discussion of issues and strategies to contribute to best practice
• Questioning
• Staff and/or client feedback
• Supporting statement of supervisor
• Authenticated evidence of relevant work experience and/or formal/informal learning
• Role play simulation

Assessment Tasks

Please Note:

Students may apply for, Special Consideration (as per information provided in the Student Handbook) via the RMIT Hub where they believe factors beyond their control have affected their academic performance. Special consideration must be lodged prior to or within 48 hours of the scheduled assessment time or assessment submission date. Special consideration is not granted automatically on application.

Application for extension of time for submission of work (where the assessment tasks will be submitted within seven days)

Oral presentation Block 2 day 2

Oral presentation including written report completed, with a fully completed and signed HLTOHS200A cover sheet must be submitted with the written report. Refer to the Student Handbook for RMIT policies and protocol for submission of task.

Workplace Assessment

On the job observation by RMIT Assessor of student in their workplace demonstrating application and underpinning knowledge in OHS issues in the dental practices (as per HLTOHS200A Participate in OHS Processes: Element 1: Plan and prepare to work safely, Element 2: Conduct work safely, Element 3: Participate in OHS consultative activities and Element 4: Follow emergency response procedures. This assessment must be undertaken post block 4 attendance but prior to student RMIT end enrolment date. See Assessment matrix below for further details 

A NYC (Not Yet Competent) result for the oral presentation assessment is managed as follows-
The marked coversheet will provide the student on what questions to resubmit. The student will have two weeks to submit the resubmission from the date of receiving the resubmission. The student will submit the original marked assessment (including original marked coversheet) and the resubmission answers that have been researched. The student with a resubmission is strongly advised to contact the principal teacher to clarify any aspects of the resubmission or arrange for a private tutorial.
Please note: Failure to undertake the above mentioned to achieve a PX result for the assessments will result in a student being being deemed NYC and requiring result in re-enrolment incurring fees.

A NYC "Not Yet Competent" result at the workplace assessment will be managed directly by the Program Coordinator.
The student will be provided an "Action Plan" that has been individually customised to the student’s learning outcomes. This may include but is not limited to the provision of supporting written evidence by the student following further research, third party evidence obtained from the student’s employer and, or re-enrolment in Unit HLTOHS200A incurring fees.
