Course Description

In this course you will acquire the skills and knowledge to modify patterns to create basic styles.

It applies to the modification of existing styled patterns to create new styles with minimal modification. Pattern and garment terminology, as well as the correct use of tools and equipment are also applied.

1.1 Pattern pieces are identified.
1.2 Pattern markings are identified.
1.3 Required style modifications are identified.
1.4 Pattern components are checked against pattern specification sheet.

Performance Criteria:

2.1 Garment requirements are confirmed.
2.2 Fabric performance characteristics that may affect style modifications are identified.
2.3 Patternmaking tools and equipment are selected and prepared.
2.4 Basic sketch of required modification is prepared.

3. Modify and finalise pattern

Performance Criteria:

3.1 Modifications are made applying basic patternmaking principles.
3.2 Pattern pieces are checked for accuracy, including seam allowances, ease allowance, seam match, hems and functional openings.
3.3 Pattern pieces are labelled, including grain lines, notches, pattern information and cutting instructions.
3.4 OHS practices are identified and followed.
3.5 Action is taken according to OHS practices to prevent accidents and
to eliminate risks to personal safety.

Details of Learning Activities

In general your training is contextualised according to the company’s production processes undertaken as a part of the trainees normal work duties.

Your tasks are selected for training and explanation of the task to be undertaken is given by the trainer and the correct procedure discussed. The task is demonstrated by the trainer and underpinning skills and knowledge are developed.

When the trainer is confident you are capable of undertaking the task safely you will then do the task. During this time your work would be monitored by the trainer and questioning and further instruction given.

You will also be given workplace based tasks and activities to complete and practice between visits. Any activities and work performed between visits are reviewed and further training is undertaken accordingly.

Teaching Schedule

In general you will be taught by 5 means within a workplace training context as follows:

1. Introduction and overview of course. Basics of skills required and course content 2 hours
2. Use of learning resources and basic skills development 2 hours
3. Complete manuals 4 hours
4. Supervised skill development to competency 40 hours
5. Consolidation of skills and assessment 2 hours

You will practice skills and understanding as a part of your workplace duties between sessions. Activities and work performed between visits are reviewed in the following session and further training is undertaken accordingly.

Overview of Assessment

Assessment is ongoing throughout the course with ongoing feedback. Final assessment includes two or three assessments or projects. Assessments will be in the form of tests for underpinning knowledge and demonstration and observation of your ability to identify pattern components, prepare to modify patterns and then modify and finalise the pattern. Also by questioning for underpinning knowledge.

You will be assessed by observation as you identify pattern components, prepare to modify patterns and then modify and finalise the pattern (You can check the performance criteria above for more details of these skills.) You will be questioned for underpinning knowledge for all these operations.
