Course Description

In this course you will acquire the skills and knowledge to sew woven and stretch knit garments.

The applies to sewing complete stretch and woven fabric garments or products and may apply to sample machining involving all operations in the assembly of a garment to specification.

It covers planning, aligning and sewing complete stretch and woven fabric garments from specifications or patterns using a variety of machines and processes.

Performance Criteria:

1.1 Garment requirements are identified from production specifications.
1.2 Machining requirements are determined.
1.3 Plan for garment construction is developed.

2. Prepare work pieces

Performance Criteria:

2.1 Work bundle is received.
2.2 Work pieces are checked for readiness for assembly.
2.3 Work pieces are laid out in sequence according to construction
plan.

Performance Criteria:

3.1 Workbench and seating are set up according to OHS practices.
3.2 Machines are cleaned and checked.
3.3 Records are maintained.
3.4 Machines are set up and adjusted according to specifications for work.

parts are identified and reported or replaced, according to
manufacturer instructions.

Performance Criteria:

4.1 Performance of machine is regularly checked for signs of faulty operation, including evidence from inspection of finished pieces and required action taken.

Performance Criteria:

5.1 Garment is sewn according to requirements for operations.
5.2 Garment is sewn according to requirements for sewing woven and stretch knit fabrics and quality standards.
5.3 Garment is sewn according to requirements for speed of work.
5.4 Machine speed and work handling are controlled for type of operations, fabrics and product type.
5.5 OHS practices are followed in operation of machines.
5.6 Action is taken according to OHS practices to prevent accidents and
to eliminate risks to personal safety.

Performance Criteria:

6.1 Garment is inspected and checked against quality standards, any faults are identified and appropriate action taken.
6.2 Results of inspection of finished garment are recorded.
6.3 Action taken to either reject or correct faulty garment is recorded.
6.4 Preventative action taken to avoid any recurrence of defective garment is recorded.
6.5 Production records and packing slips are completed.
6.6 Completed work is directed to next operation or packing section.

Details of Learning Activities

In general your training is contextualised according to the company’s production processes undertaken as a part of the trainees normal work duties.

Your tasks are selected for training and explanation of the task to be undertaken is given by the trainer and the correct procedure discussed. The task is demonstrated by the trainer and underpinning skills and knowledge are developed.

When the trainer is confident you are capable of undertaking the task safely you will then do the task. During this time your work would be monitored by the trainer and questioning and further instruction given.

You will also be given workplace based tasks and activities to complete and practice between visits. Any activities and work performed between visits are reviewed and further training is undertaken accordingly.
RMIT University learning resources are used to support your training.


Teaching Schedule

In general you will be taught by 5 means within a workplace training context:

1. Introduction and overview of course. Basics of skills required and course content 2 hours
2. Use of learning resources and basic skills development 2 hours
3. Complete manuals 4 hours
4. Supervised skill development to competency 20 hours
5. Consolidation of skills and assessment 2 hours

You will practice skills and understanding as a part of your workplace duties between sessions. Activities and work performed between visits are reviewed in the following session and further training is undertaken accordingly.

Overview of Assessment

Assessment is ongoing throughout the course and will include three assessments or projects. Assessments will be in the form of tests for underpinning knowledge and demonstration and observation of your abillity to plan garment constructions, prepare work pieces and workstation, identify poor machine performance, sew garment and complete work. Also by questioning for underpinning knowledge.

You will assessed by observation and your ability to plan garment constructions, prepare work pieces and workstation, identify poor machine performance, sew garment and complete work (you can check the performance criteria above for more details of these skills.) You will be questioned for underpinning knowledge for all these operations.
