Course Description

This unit of competency describes the skills and knowledge required for a dental assistant to prepare patients for dental radiography. It also describes the skills and knowledge to process and mount conventional dental radiographs. 

This unit applies to dental assisting work.

The skills in this unit must be applied in accordance with Commonwealth and State/Territory legislation, Australian/New Zealand Standards and industry codes of practice.

Element:

1. Prepare for dental radiography

Performance Criteria:

1.1 Position the patient comfortably
1.2 Reassure the patient and explain the procedure in language that is easily understood
1.3 Ask the patient to remove items that may interfere with the radiographic examination, and offer appropriate explanation
1.4 Ensure patient, other members of the dental team and the public are protected from ionising radiations
1.5 Assist the operator in the implementation of safe work practices to minimise radiation risks to workers and to patients during procedure
1.6 Select and prepare the correct radiographic film or image receptors and relevant holders for the radiographic examination, and make it available to the operator

2. Prepare equipment and materials for dental radiography

Performance Criteria:

2.1 Maintain clean and dry working surfaces
2.2 Clean and maintain processing equipment in good working order
2.3 Maintain processing solutions at the correct strength and temperature
2.4 Record accurately the date of preparation of solutions
2.5 Arrange for servicing of instruments and equipment in line with manufacturers’ instructions and Radiation Health Committee national policies, codes and standards
2.6 File equipment service records in a location within the surgery that can be readily accessed
2.7 Prepare program to receive image, correctly orientate and label radiograph and enter patient data

3. Process and mount dental radiographs

Performance Criteria:

3.1 Protect processing facility and equipment against accidental intrusion of light
3.2 Wear personal protective equipment
3.3 Handle radiographic film packages or image receptors carefully so that their quality is maintained
3.4 Carry out processing stages in the correct sequence and for the appropriate duration in accordance with manufacturers’ specifications
3.5 Identify common faults caused by incorrect processing and notify operator if these occur
3.6 Rectify processing faults in accordance with operator’s instructions
3.7 Notify the operator of any processing faults that cannot be rectified prior to further radiographs being processed
3.8 Label, date and file the radiograph mounting accurately and legibly
3.9 Mount and secure radiographs in correct anatomical position for viewing

4. Maintain stock of unexposed radiographic film and chemicals

Performance Criteria:

4.1 Store radiographic film, image receptors and chemicals in accordance with manufacturers’ specifications
4.2 Maintain sufficient stock
4.3 Rotate film stock so that film is used before its expiry date

5. Assure the quality of dental radiographic processing

Performance Criteria:

5.1 Participate effectively in radiographic quality assurance programs
5.2 Monitor processing solutions for deterioration
5.3 Notify the operator when radiographs do not meet the quality criteria of the reference radiograph produced under optimum conditions
5.4 Collect and record all unacceptable radiographs that do not meet diagnostic standards due to processing error, and identify how processing can be improved
5.5 Dispose of waste chemicals safely in accordance with manufacturers’ specifications and legislative requirements
5.6 Maintain and clean the imaging plate scanner according to organisation procedures

Details of Learning Activities

A combination of learning activities have been designed to help students to achieve learning outcomes of this unit:

Teaching Schedule

This unit is scheduled for delivery of trainee groups as per the timetable issued in Phase 1 Day 1 and is also located on BlackBoard. The classes will be delivered over the Phase 3, Phase 4 and Phase 5 of the program, on level 3 or 2 of Building 154, RMIT (within the Royal Dental Hospital of Melbourne).

Notification will be provided via student email if the date or location change.

The following schedule is as per the timetable issued on Phase 1 Day 1 and is provided on BlackBoard (subject to change at the discretion of RMIT, in this event notification will be provided to your student email).

Phase 3 Dental Radiography lecture; Legal framework, Patient preparation and Digital Radiography (Facilitator led class work shop/class activities)

Phase 3 Dental Radiography lecture; Manual Developing (Facilitator led class work shop/class activities)

Post Phase 3 Workplace Assessment (to be scheduled individually for each student at their dental clinic)

Phase 4, Day 4 Mounting Workshop & Practical Mounting assessment

Phase 4, Day 4 Practical session (Completion of practical worksheets and Patient preparation assessment)

Post Phase 4 Dental Radiography video assessment 

Phase 5, Day 2 students complete the following assessments:

  • Written test
  • Simulated Practical Assessment 
  • Mounting of Dental Radiographs

 To be deemed competent you must demonstrate an understanding of all aspects required of the competency. Assessment methods have been designed to measure your achievement of each competency in a flexible manner over multiple tasks.


Assessment Tasks

To demonstrate competency in this course, students will need to complete all the following pieces of assessment to a satisfactory standard. 

 

1. HLTDEN002 Radiography Workplace Assessment

(Including: Patient preparation (1) and Developing of radiographs using either manual or digital developing technique (1))

This is conducted after Phase 3. Detailed information on assessment criteria will be explained to students during their class attendance. Allocated assessor will contact the student and/or Workplace Assessor for discussion and scheduling of the suitable time for this assessment. Student knowledge and skills will be observed in the workplace according to assessment criteria provided in assessment document. Student will be observed in patient preparation, equipment preparation and developing of radiographic images using either manual developing or digital scanning.

Students will attempt the workplace assessments under supervision of the assessor and they will be graded with either a S (Satisfactory) or NYS (Not Yet Satisfactory) according to the assessment guidelines and criteria outlined in the HLTDEN002 Assessment Overview.

In order to achieve a Satisfactory result, student must successfully complete all listed requirements of assessment criteria. 

Students will receive verbal feedback on this assessment.

 

2. HLTDEN002 Radiography Practical Mounting Assessment (1)

This assessment will be conducted after practical radiography mounting session on Day 4 Phase 4. Students will be required to mount 3 conventional films which will be issued at the time of this assessment together with assessment response sheet. This will be conducted under supervision at RMIT under exam conditions.

Students will be graded with either a S (Satisfactory) or NYS (Not Yet Satisfactory) according to the assessment guidelines and criteria outlined in the HLTDEN002 Assessment Overview.

In order to achieve a Satisfactory result, student must successfully complete all listed requirements of assessment criteria.

 

Students will receive verbal feedback on this assessment.

 

 

3. HLTDEN002 Radiography Simulated Patient preparation Assessment (2)

This assessment will be conducted on Day 4 Phase 4 during student attendance to the Dental Radiography practical session. Students will be issued with the different scenarios in order to prepare the patient and equipment required for radiographic procedure. Assessment criteria and further information will be discussed with students during their attendance to lectures, as well as practical session. 

To undertake a practical clinical assessment (simulation), students MUST present for the assessment process as follows:

  • Appropriate clinical attire (no shorts, jeans or tracksuit pants, no bare midriff, no singlet tops).
  • Footwear fully covered in leather/vinyl (not suede) clinical footwear.
  • Hair is to be contained by tying back or in appropriate hair cover.
  • Fingernails must be short and clean and no nail varnish to be worn. No artificial fingernails are to be worn.
  • The wearing of henna is acceptable.
  • No jewellery to be worn on the hands or wrists. Wedding rings or jewellery that cannot be removed for cultural reasons must be taped with an appropriate waterproof tape .
  • All cuts/ skin abrasions on the hands or wrists must be covered with a waterproof dressing

A student that is non-compliant with any of the above requirements will not be permitted to undertake practical exercise or assessment at the scheduled time which will result in assessment being rescheduled. Workplace supervisor will be informed of this via email or phone call. 

Student will attempt the practical assessments under supervision of the assessor and they will be graded with either a S (Satisfactory) or NYS (Not Yet Satisfactory) according to the assessment guidelines and criteria outlined in the HLTDEN002 Assessment Overview. In order to achieve a Satisfactory result, student must successfully complete all listed requirements of assessment criteria 

Students will receive verbal feedback on this assessment.

 

4. HLTDEN002 Radiography Video Assessment 

(Including: Patient preparation (3), Developing of radiographs using either manual or digital developing technique (2) and Mounting of radiographs using either conventional films or electronic images(2)

This assessment will be conducted at the student work clinic. Students will be required to produce a video of their clinical performance during radiographic procedure to demonstrate knowledge and skills relevant to performance criteria assessed. Students will need to include patient and equipment preparation, developing of radiographs using either manual or digital developing method and mounting of radiographs using either conventional films or electronic images.

Detailed report will need to be submitted as part of this assessment which will provide opportunity for students to justify their performance in the video.

Assessment criteria and further information will be discussed with students during their attendance to lectures.

Assessment task is required to be submitted via Turnitin. Due date for submission is four weeks after Phase 4.  

In order to achieve a Satisfactory result, all assessment criteria must be completed successfully.

Students will receive their feedback via Turnitin. 

 

5. HLTDEN002 Radiography Simulated Manual Developing Assessment (3)

This is conducted on Day 2 Phase 5 as per timetable. Students will be assessed on handling and developing of conventional films using manual developing method, relevant errors and chemicals. 

To undertake a practical clinical assessment (simulation), students MUST present for the assessment process as follows:

  • Appropriate clinical attire (no shorts, jeans or tracksuit pants, no bare midriff, no singlet tops).
  • Footwear fully covered in leather/vinyl (not suede) clinical footwear.
  • Hair is to be contained by tying back or in appropriate hair cover.

This assessment will be conducted on Day 2 Phase 5. Students will be required to mount 3 conventional films which will be issued at the time of this assessment together with assessment response sheet. This will be conducted under supervision at RMIT under exam conditions.

Students will be graded with either a S (Satisfactory) or NYS (Not Yet Satisfactory) according to the assessment guidelines and criteria outlined in the HLTDEN002 Assessment Overview.

In order to achieve a Satisfactory result, student must successfully complete all listed requirements of assessment criteria.

Students will receive verbal feedback on this assessment.

 

7. HLTDEN002 Radiography Written test

This is conducted on Day 2 Phase 5 as per timetable.The written test will be conducted under supervision at RMIT under exam conditions.  

In order to achieve a Satisfactory result, student must score 60% of the overall mark.

Feedback to students will be provided via Grade Centre on Blackboard.

Performance Evidence

The candidate must show evidence of the ability to complete tasks outlined in elements and performance criteria of this unit, manage tasks and manage contingencies in the context of the job role. There must be evidence that the candidate has:

  • prepared at least 3 patients for dental radiographic imaging procedures
  • consistently applied safe work practices for dental radiography work including:

-    using protective equipment to minimise the risk of ionising radiations to self and patient

-    correctly handling, storing and disposing of radiographic films and processing solutions receptors

  • correctly processed, mounted and filed radiographic films and digital images on at least 3 occasions, including:

-    applying the correct processing procedure

-    implementing remedies for common processing faults

-    recognising common processing errors

-    handling digital receptors carefully

-    attaching accurate, legible and complete records
