Course Description

This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to clean, sterilise and package reusable medical devices and equipment.

This unit applies to workers in office based health practice settings such as general practitioner (GP) surgeries, dental practices and other environments where a limited range of sterilisation equipment may be available. They follow established procedures and work under general supervision.

3.1 Open and unlock reusable medical devices with hinges or ratchets
3.2 Prepare instrument trays in accordance with workplace protocols
3.3 Package or wrap reusable medical devices in a manner that prevents damage to delicate items
3.4 Use chemical indicator according to standards
3.5 Pack, secure and label sterile barrier systems (SBS) to comply with aseptic removal principles

4.1 Interpret and apply manufacturer recommendations for cleaning and checking of steriliser and accessory equipment.
4.2 Correctly use the numerical and other features of the steriliser and operate in accordance with manufacturer instructions
4.3 Assign cycle and batch control number and complete documentation.
4.4 Load steriliser to ensure sterilant contact and according to standards
4.5 Remove sterilised load immediately on completion of cycle
4.6 Follow criteria for release of processed items considering manual task risk factors

5.1 Interpret and adhere to operational monitoring and testing, performance qualification and maintenance of sterilisers and associated equipment

5.4 Store documentation in accordance with organisation procedures

Details of Learning Activities

A combination of learning activities have been designed to help students to achieve learning outcomes of this unit:

  • Facilitator led classroom based lecture and or workshop using PowerPoint Presentations
  • Written classroom tasks
  • Demonstration and classroom discussion
  • Facilitator led practical clinical demonstration
  • Group discussions
  • Participation in group activities based on simulated workplace exercises
  • Clinical practice, peer evaluation/feedback session/completion of practical worksheets
  • Online learning resources accessed via myRMIT Studies (BlackBoard) including online tests or quizzes
  • Self managed research to support completion of Reprocessing of instruments written test and practical assessments.


Teaching Schedule

This unit is scheduled for delivery of trainee groups as per the timetable issued in Phase 1 Day 1 and is also located on BlackBoard. The classes will be delivered over the Phase 2, Phase 3 and Phase 4 of the program, on level 3 or 2 of Building 154, RMIT (within the Royal Dental Hospital of Melbourne).

Notification will be provided via student email if the date or location change.

The following schedule is as per the timetable issued on Phase 1 Day 1 and is provided on BlackBoard (subject to change at the discretion of RMIT, in this event notification will be provided to your student email).

Phase 2 Reprocessing of instruments lecture (Facilitator led class work shop/group activities and presentations)

Post Phase 2 Video assessment 

Phase 3 Reprocessing of instruments lecture (Facilitator led class work shop/group activities and presentations)

Phase 3 Reprocessing of instruments practical session (practical activities and demonstrations/completion of practical worksheets)

Post Phase 3 - Workplace Assessment (to be scheduled individually for each student at their work clinic)

Phase 4 Day 3 students complete the following assessments:

  • Written test
  • Simulated Practical Assessment

Students will be expected to utilise a range of recent and appropriate library, electronic, text and other resources. Students will be provided with resources and tools for learning in this course through myRMIT Studies (BlackBoard).


Overview of Assessment

You must show evidence of the ability to complete tasks outlined in elements and performance criteria of this unit, manage tasks and manage contingencies in the context of the job role. There must be evidence that you have:

 followed organisation procedures, work processes, safe manual handling requirements and national standards for the reprocessing of reusable medical devices on at least 3 occasions

 operated and monitored reprocessing equipment on at least 1 occasion

 identified and responded to routine process and maintenance problems and variations 

To be deemed competent you must demonstrate an understanding of all aspects required of the competency. 

Regular attendance is necessary.  Assessment methods have been designed to measure your achievement of each competency in a flexible manner over multiple tasks and consist of theory and practical based tasks.


Assessment Tasks

To demonstrate competency in this course, students will need to complete all the following pieces of assessment to a satisfactory standard. 

 

1. HLTINF002 Reprocessing Video Assessment 

This assessment will be conducted at the student work clinic. Students will be required to produce a video of their clinical performance within the reprocessing area to demonstrate knowledge and skills relevant to performance criteria assessed. Detailed report will need to be submitted as part of this assessment which will provide opportunity for students to justify their performance in the video. Assessment criteria and further information will be discussed with students during their attendance to lectures.

Assessment task is required to be submitted via Turnitin. Due date for submission is four weeks after Phase 2.  

In order to achieve a Satisfactory result, all assessment criteria must be completed successfully.

Students will receive their feedback via Turnitin. 

 

2. HLTINF002 Reprocessing Workplace Assessment

This is conducted after Phase 3. Allocated assessor will contact the student and/or Workplace Assessor for discussion and scheduling of the suitable time for this assessment. Student knowledge and skills will be observed in the workplace according to assessment criteria provided in assessment document. Detailed information will be provided to students during their class attendance.

Students will attempt the workplace assessments under supervision of the assessor and they will be graded with either a S (Satisfactory) or NYS (Not Yet Satisfactory) according to the assessment guidelines and criteria outlined in the HLTINF001 Assessment Overview. In order to achieve a Satisfactory result, student must successfully complete all listed requirements of assessment criteria. 

Students will receive verbal feedback on this assessment.

 

3. HLTINF002 Reprocessing Written test

This is conducted on Day 2 Phase 4 as per timetable.The written test will be conducted under supervision at RMIT under exam conditions.  

In order to achieve a Satisfactory result, student must score 60% of the overall mark.

Feedback to students will be provided via Grade Centre on Blackboard. 

 

4. HLTINF002 Reprocessing Simulated Practical Assessment 

This is conducted on Day 2 Phase 4 as per timetable.

To undertake a practical clinical assessment (simulation), students MUST present for the assessment process as follows:

  • Appropriate clinical attire (no shorts, jeans or tracksuit pants, no bare midriff, no singlet tops).
  • Footwear fully covered in leather/vinyl (not suede) clinical footwear.
  • Hair is to be contained by tying back or in appropriate hair cover.
  • Fingernails must be short and clean and no nail varnish to be worn. No artificial fingernails are to be worn.
  • The wearing of henna is acceptable.
  • No jewellery to be worn on the hands or wrists. Wedding rings or jewellery that cannot be removed for cultural reasons must be taped with an appropriate waterproof tape .
  • All cuts/ skin abrasions on the hands or wrists must be covered with a waterproof dressing

A student that is non-compliant with any of the above requirements will not be permitted to undertake practical exercise or assessment at the scheduled time which will result in assessment being rescheduled. Workplace supervisor will be informed of this via email or phone call.
