Course Description

 This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to provide a first aid response to a casualty. The unit applies to all workers who may be required to provide a first aid response in a range of situations, including community and workplace settings.

Specific licensing /regulatory requirements relating to this competency, including requirements for refresher training should be obtained from the relevant national/state/territory Work Health and Safety Regulatory Authorities.

2.5 Use available resources and equipment to make the casualty as comfortable as possible

2.6 Operate first aid equipment according to manufacturer’s instructions

2.7 Monitor the casualty’s condition and respond in accordance with first aid principles

  • Facilitator led practical clinical demonstration

  • Participation in group activities based on simulated workplace exercises

  • Practical clinical practice, peer evaluation/feedback session

 This unit is scheduled for delivery for both Trainee Groups and Non Trainee Groups and the teaching schedule is per the timetable issued on Phase 1 Day1 and is also available on BlackBoard.

Phase 4 Day 1 First Aid lecture (Facilitator led class work shop/classroom activities)

Phase 4 Day 1 Practical Assessment :  CPR Practical Assessment 1 (adult) &  CPR Practical Assessment 2 (infant)  

 Students will attempt the practical assessments under supervision of the assessor and they will be graded with either a S (Satisfactory) or NYS (Not Yet Satisfactory) according to the assessment guidelines and criteria outlined in the HLTAID003 Assessment Overview. In order to achieve a Satisfactory result, student must successfully complete all listed requirements of assessment criteria.Students will receive verbal feedback on this assessment on the day of the assessment.

Phase 5 Day 1 Practical Assessment:    Bandaging and slings, Bronchodilator and Spacer and Autoinjectors

Overview of Assessment

Before the critical aspects of evidence are considered all prerequisites must be met.

Each candidate must show evidence of the ability to complete tasks outlined in elements and performance criteria of this unit, manage tasks and manage contingencies in the context of the job role.

There must be evidence that the candidate has completed the following tasks in line with state/territory regulations, first aid codes of practice, Australian Resuscitation Council (ARC) guidelines and workplace procedures:

  • Followed DRSABCD in line with ARC guidelines, including:
  • Responded to at least two simulated first aid scenarios contextualised to the candidate’s workplace/community setting
  • Applied first aid procedures

To be deemed competent you must demonstrate an understanding of all aspects required of the competency. Assessment methods have been designed to measure your achievement of each competency in a flexible manner over multiple tasks.


Assessment Tasks

 To demonstrate competency in this course, students will need to complete all the following pieces of assessment to a satisfactory standard. 

1. Assessment Online Quizzes

This is conducted after classes in Phase 3 and access via BlackBoard.  Students have three attempts to complete the three online quizzes and feedback is provided for the online quizzes.

2. Phase 4 Day 1 Practical Assessment 2:  CPR Practical Assessment 1 (adult)     

 Students will attempt the practical assessments under supervision of the assessor and they will be graded with either a S (Satisfactory) or NYS (Not Yet Satisfactory) according to the assessment guidelines and criteria outlined in the HLTAID003 Assessment Overview. In order to achieve a Satisfactory result, student must successfully complete all listed requirements of assessment criteria.Students will receive verbal feedback on this assessment on the day of the assessment.
