Course Description

This unit of competency describes the skills and knowledge required to prepare clients for basic massage and negotiate treatment with them. Learners will be involved with both practical simulation and workplace-based delivery in the student Remedial Massage Clinic.

1.    Select the therapeutic principles to determine treatment 

Performance Criteria:

1.1    Determine appropriate therapeutic principles of treatment according to assessment of client and within the skills of competence of the practitioner
1.2    Ascertain contra-indications to treatment and possible complicating factors and modify treatment strategy used according to massage principles
1.3    Select treatment appropriate to the client’s condition and supported on the basis of established massage practice 


2.    Discuss the treatment strategy with the client  

Performance Criteria:

2.1    Allocate sufficient time to conclude sessions at a pace appropriate to the client
2.2    Negotiate client compliance
2.3    Explain any perceived risks of the client’s condition and treatment
2.4    Discuss the responsibilities of practitioner and client within the treatment plan

From time to time you will be asked to access other resources, including websites and journals. Information on these additional resources will be published on the learning hub.
Students are also required to bring 2 large towels with them to each class.  All other supplies will be provided. 

Overview of Assessment

Primary assessment involves on-going practical and applied assessment in a clinical workplace or simulated environment designed to assist the learner to integrate skills and knowledge.  Learners may also be required to demonstrate competency through completion of a range of assessments including;  quizzes, practical demonstration, submission of learning and assessment guide and assignments. Achieving competency in each assessment is required to achieve competency for the unit.

Assessment Tasks


  • This unit is assessed in conjunction with others in the subject Remedial Massage Treatment.  
  • In order to successfully complete this unit, you must be assessed as competent for each the of the assessment items detailed below.
  • Complete details, including assessment criteria, for each of the assessment tasks outlined below will be provided on the learning hub.
Tasks 1: Progressive Practical Assessments:
There will be 3 Practical Assessments that assess your ability to apply the skills and knowledge learned in class. These assessments will be grouped into specific regions of the body as studied in class. Dates are outlined in the teaching schedule.

Task 2: Case Study Practical Assessment:
At the end of the semester you will complete a practical case study assessment, where you will be assessed in a simulated clinic environment. You will be assessed on your ability to provide a complete initial consultation based on a simulation of a common client presentation.

Task 3: Thermal Therapies Practical Report:
At the end of semester 1 you will complete a practical class on thermal therapies. You will be required to complete the practical and write a report on your findings.

Task 4: Patient Quota:
Whilst in clinic you are required to provide massage treatments to your peers.  Each student is required to competently treat a minimum of 5 patients by the end of their last rostered clinic shift for semester 1, 2011.
