Course Description

This unit of competency describes the skills and knowledge required to promote oral health for older persons. The experience of pain and problems with eating and chewing can adversely affect people’s daily lives, self-esteem and well-being

This unit acknowledges the interrelationship between oral health and general health which is especially pronounced among older people

All procedures are carried out in accordance with occupational health and safety policies and procedures, current infection control guidelines, Australian and New Zealand Standards, State/Territory legislative requirements and organisation policy

This unit applies to dental assistants and to other health care workers who are actively involved in promoting the general well-being of older clients through the promotion of healthy eating habits and good oral health

1.1 Actively encourage the client to discuss oral health problems without embarrassment

4.2 Record oral health in the resident's personal care plan

4.5 Assist clients and their carers to clean and maintain dentures

A combination of learning activities will support student’s learning in this unit, such as

· Facilitator led classroom based lecture and or workshop using PowerPoint Presentations

· Facilitator led practical clinical demonstration

· Participation in group activities based on simulated workplace exercises

Teaching Schedule

This unit is scheduled for delivery as per the Certificate IV timetable issued in Induction Day and is also located on BlackBoard (subject to change at the discretion of RMIT, in this event notification will be provided to your student email).

The classes will be held on level 3 or 2 of Building 154 (within the Royal Dental Hospital of Melbourne). Notification will be provided via student email if the date or location change.

Overview of Assessment

Assessment will include demonstration of underpinning knowledge, and skills; assessment activities may include oral presentation, written work, written tests, practical tasks and patient logbook.


Assessment Tasks

You will attempt the assessments and you will be graded with either a S (Satisfactory) or NYS (Not Yet Satisfactory) according to the assessment guidelines. 
 
Written Exam (as per timetable)
 
The written exam is a two hour exam and comprises of true and false questons, short answers and multiple-choice questions. The exam will be conducted under the supervision at RMIT under exam conditions and a final mark of 60% is required for a pass in HLTDA413B Implement an oral hygiene program for older people.

Field Project Presentation and residential client examination.
Students are to organise an ‘Oral Health’ presentation at an aged care facility of their choice. The work experience is authenticated by a third party member of the aged care facility (Co-ordinator / Manager).  The student is also to conduct an case study examination and provide ‘Oral Health’ education to two (2) residential clients of the aged care facility.

Written Project and Oral Presentation.
Case Study Report. Students are to submit a detailed report on the two (2) residences which were examined and provided with ‘Oral Health’ education during their field project. Students are also to present an oral presentation to the class of their ’Field Project’.


Assessment Matrix

To achieve a grade of CA (Competency achieved) for the unit HLTDA413B Implement an oral hygiene program for older people, you are required to obtain a pass result for all the following theoretical and practical assessments.

Written Exam (as per timetable).

The written exam is a two hour exam and comprises of true and false questons, short answers and multiple-choice questions.  A final mark of 60% is required for a pass in HLTDA413B Implement an oral hygiene program for older people.
 

Field Project Presentation and residential client examination.

Failure to complete any of the above listed tasks/assessments will result in an NYC (Not yet competent) for the unit HLTDA413B Implement an oral hygiene program for older
people. A NYC result will be entered in the student record. This will result in non-completion of this unit of competence and re-enrolment will be required incurring fees and a return to class work and completion of any relevant assessments at the time of the re-enrolment.
