Course Description

This unit specifies the workplace performance required by a worker to contribute to work health and safety (WHS) processes where there is responsibility for own work outputs and possibly limited responsibility for the work output of others.

Application of this unit should be contextualised to reflect any specific workplace risks, hazards and associated safety practices

Details of Learning Activities

Facilitator led class on safety in the workplace: legal aspects, risks management, safe work practices and emergency procedures workplace via Power Point presentation and classroom discussion and small group activity.

Topic 1: The legislative & organisational framework for WHS:

The laws, regulations & codes of practice and Legal requirements in the workplace.

  • What is workplace safety?
  • Laws, regulations & codes of practice.

Topic 2: Risk management :

  • The difference between hazard, risk and residual risk.

Teaching Schedule

 

 As per Certificate IV in Dental Assisting timetable.

 Three-hour facilitator led classroom based lecture program via Power Point presentation, classroom discussion and small group activities on the role of the dental assistant in maintaining a safe work environment. Students are explained how to access the HLTWHS300A from myRMIT Studies (BlackBoard) and students read the Learner Guide and complete the WorkBook in preparation for the written test. A Learning Task: Case Study is issued and to be submittetd at the next class.

Overview of Assessment

Assessment will include demonstration of underpinning knowledge, and skills; assessment activities may include quizzes,  written work and third party report.


Assessment Tasks

Submission of Learning Task: Case Study (Elements 1-4); Assessment weight=10 %

HLTWHS300A Written Test (Elements 1 - 5); Assessment  weight = 80%

Third Party Evidence Form: signed by Workplace Supervisor: (Elements 1 - 5); Assessment  weight = 10%

Please note: The Third Party Evidence Document has been designed for workplace implementation. Completion of the document provides a student with the opportunity to gain constructive feedback from Supervisor/mentors and allows the Supervisor/mentor to evaluate the student’s progress and provide the RMIT teacher/assessor with any relevant feedback as to the progress and application and development of the student’s skills and knowledge in safe work practices.

The Learning task: Case Study. Learner Guide, Workbook and the Third party evidence documents are aligned directly with the desired learning outcomes of this unit of competency and as such will provide students with study direction and focus in work based training.

Failure to complete the unit of competence will result in non-completion of the Certificate IV in Dental Assisting Program.    Please note that this is a prerequiste to the Certifcate IV in Dental Assisting (Dental Radiography).

This unit of competency is delivered against current industry standards. It is recommended that all students are familiar with the current ADA Infection Control Guidelines 2012 document.
                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                               Students are required to support learning outcomes for the unit HLTWHS300A with work based experience and further self-managed research to support positive outcome is this unit. A student may feel it necessary to seek further clinical experience outside their place of employment in order to achieve the required Learning Outcomes for Unit HLTWHS300A.
                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                       The WorkBook is available to all students enrolled in this unit of competency for access via myRMIT Studies (BlackBoard). Students are strongly encouraged to complete that WorkBook in detail as it will support the development of skills and knowledge in this unit and will assist the student with the associated written and workplace tasks.
