This unit specifies the workplace performance required by a worker to contribute to work health and safety (WHS) processes where there is responsibility for own work outputs and possibly limited responsibility for the work output of others.
Application of this unit should be contextualised to reflect any specific workplace risks, hazards and associated safety practices

1.1 Plan work in accordance with relevant WHS legislation, standards, codes of practice/compliance codes and guidance material
1.2 Identify hazards as part of work planning and work process

Details of Learning Activities
Facilitator led class on safety in the workplace: legal aspects, risks management, safe work practices and emergency procedures workplace via Power Point presentation and classroom discussion and small group activity.
Topic 1: The legislative & organisational framework for WHS:
The laws, regulations & codes of practice and Legal requirements in the workplace.
What is workplace safety?
Laws, regulations & codes of practice.
Legal requirements in the workplace. Supporting others in the workplace.
Topic 2: Risk management :
The difference between hazard, risk and residual risk.
Near misses and accidents. Risk Assessment .
Risk (hierarchy of ) control. Reporting.
Risk management (The Take 5 approach).
Topic 3: Safe workplace practices:
Personal Protective Equipment (PPE).
Managing stress and fatigue.
Manual handling. Ergonomics.
Infection control (introduction).
Topic 4: Emergency procedures: Evacuation procedures.
Medical emergencies and first aid .
Clinical experience in the student’s workplace.
Self managed research of their workplace, completion of the HLTWHS WorkBook , including third party evidence.
As per Certificate IV in Dental Assisting timetable.
Three-hour facilitator led classroom based lecture program via Power Point presentation, classroom discussion and small group activities on the role of the dental assistant in maintaining a safe work environment. Students are explained how to access the HLTWHS300A from myRMIT Studies (BlackBoard) and students read the Learner Guide and complete the WorkBook in preparation for the written test.
Topic 1: The legislative & organisational framework for WHS: What is workplace safety? The laws, regulations & codes of practice, legal requirements in the workplace and supporting others in the workplace.
Topic 2: Risk management : The differences between hazard,risk and residual risk, near misses and accidents , risk assessment , risk (hierarchy of ) control, reporting and risk management (The Take 5 approach).
Topic 3: Safe workplace practices: Housekeeping , personal protective equipment (PPE) , managing stress and fatigue , manual handling , ergonomics , handling chemicals, infection control (introduction), radiation, and safety signs.
Topic 4: Emergency procedures: Evacuation procedures, fire, medical emergencies and first aid, bomb threats and natural disasters.

Overview of Assessment
Assessment will include demonstration of underpinning knowledge, and skills; assessment activities may include quizzes, written work and third party report.

Third Party Evidence Form: signed by Workplace Supervisor: Assessment weight = 10%
Please note: The Third Party Evidence Document has been designed for workplace implementation. Completion of the document provides a student with the opportunity to gain constructive feedback from Supervisors/mentors and allows the Supervisor/mentor to evaluate the student’s progress and provide the RMIT teacher/assessor with any relevant feedback as to the progress and application and development of the student’s skills and knowledge in safe work practices.
The learner guide, workbook and the third party evidence documents are aligned directly with the desired learning outcomes of this unit of competency and as such will provide students with study direction and focus in work based training.

Non completion or non-submission of compulsory tasks:
Failure to complete any or all of the compulsory tasks listed above will prevent the student from achieving a CA (competency achieved) result for unit HLTWHS300A. This will result in the student not completing the unit successfully. “NYC” (not yet competent) will be recorded and re-enrolment will be required to continue the unit/program. Fees will be incurred.
