Course Description

This unit of competency describes the skills and knowledge required to provide an oral health promotion program

This unit acknowledges that dental diseases are the most prevalent chronic diseases worldwide and that oral disease impacts on a person’s everyday life causing pain and disability and influencing eating, sleeping and social roles

All procedures are carried out in accordance with occupational health and safety policies and procedures, current infection control guidelines, Australia/New Zealand Standards, state/territory legislative requirements and organisation policy

This unit applies to dental assistants and to other health care workers who are actively involved in promoting general well-being through the promotion of healthy eating habits and good oral health

A combination of learning activities will support student’s learning in this unit, such as

  • Facilitator led classroom based lecture and or workshop using PowerPoint Presentations
  • Demonstration and classroom discussion
  • Facilitator led practical clinical demonstration

  • Participation in group activities based on simulated workplace exercises
  • Online learning resources accessed via myRMIT Studies (BlackBoard)
    including online tests or quizzes

Teaching Schedule

This unit is scheduled for the Certificate IV in Dental Assisting as per timetable issued on Induction Day and is located on BlackBoard. The classes are conducted on Level 3 or 2 of Building 154 (within the Royal Dental Hospital of Melbourne). Notification will be provided via student email if the date or location change (subject to change at the discretion of RMIT).

Overview of Assessment

Assessment will include demonstration of underpinning knowledge, and skills; assessment activities may include oral presentation, written work, written tests, practical tasks and patient logbook.


Assessment Tasks

To achieve a grade of CA (Competency achieved) for the unit HLTDA414B Implement an oral health promotion program, you are required to attend classes and assessments and obtain a pass result for all the following theoretical and practical assessments that are used to measure elements, performance criteria, essential knowledge and essential skills as outlined in the health training package.

Written Test.
This is a traditional timed (2 hour) written assessment, consisting of true and false, essays and multiple choice answers. The pass mark of 60% must be achieved.

Field Project Presentation.
Students are to develop and deliver an integrated oral health promotion strategies to a targeted National Health Priorities group/organisation. The work experience is authenticated by a third party member of the group / organisation (Co-ordinator / Manager / Participant Feedback Survey).

Written Project Report.
Students are to submit a detailed report on the Field Project Presentation conducted to the targeted National Health Priorities group / organisation.

Oral Presentation.
The student will present information to the class of their Field Project Presentation which had been developed and delivered to the targeted National Health Priorities group / organisation. 

  

Failure to complete any of the above listed tasks/assessments will result in an NYC (Not yet competent) for the unit HLTDA414B Implement an oral health promotion program.  A NYC result will be entered in the student record. This will result in non-completion of this unit of competence and re-enrolment will be required incurring fees and a return to class work and completion of any relevant assessments at the time of the re-enrolment.


Assessment Matrix
